Koine Greek CBE anywhere?
#11
Question, is there a reason why you're taking this language over other languages? Is there much overlap with Modern Greek?

Not the OP, but the short answer is that, yes, there's overlap, but Koine is different enough and studied for a specific enough purpose that it's worth looking for focused resources. This is especially true if you're trying to study the language for theological reasons (be they academic or spiritual) as it was the lingua franca of the New Testament era, and it has a huge literary body from that era. Koine is also a little simpler grammatically.

Yes, for textual criticism of the New Testament one really has to know Koine Greek rather than any other Greek.

So no, knowing modern Greek wouldn't help with understanding texts written in Koine Greek.

However, would knowing Koine Greek be enough to pass an exam on Modern Greek? That's a good question.
I haven't seen a modern Greek exam, and I don't know enough for sure if there is enough overlap to pass, as I've only looked at Modern Greek on duolingo very briefly.

Great question, I should look at some practice questions for the modern Greek exams and what % you'd need to get on the test to pass.
Although don't a lot of the language exams require writing? I have never taken one. That might be a deal breaker with the differences.
