I just took the American Literature Clep this morning and passed with a score of 78.
I studied for about 6 weeks before the test using the following resources:
Peterson's practice exams
REA guide and practice exams
Idiots Guide (which I got from the library)
Review of all works I wasn't very familiar with using Sparknotes, Wikipedia, and just general web searches such as Poem Hunter.
Clep study guide and practice exams which I ordered from CLEP.
Review using video lessons on education-portal.com
I was still pretty apprehensive going into the test so I was pleasantly surprised by my score.
For those thinking of taking the test I would say obviously know your major authors and works, plus research kind of obscure short stories by major authors.
Know what authors fall into what movements and time periods as well as specifically regional authors.
Really study major poets and poems and have a grasp on their meanings - which time period and movements they belong to.
Study literary terms, devices, and types of poems/meter.
Aside from major authors have a well-rounded knowledge of minority and female writers and their works.
That is about all. Study to have a well-rounded knowledge and don't sweat it too much.

This is probably one of the best timelines I've found so far for this exam (which I take in 3 days). GASP.

Don't miss out on something great just because it might also be difficult.

You do realize there are different forms of this exam, right? Just because one person might share which authors were covered on their exam does not guarantee that this will be the same on your exam. It sounds like you have some good study prep to get a good start. Have you checked out free-clep-prep.com? If not, visit the CLEP study guides on that site for some additional direction. Good luck!
