Applying Fema Credits to Traditional Community Colleges?
#1
I'm currently working on completing all courses available through the FEMA Independent Study Program (ISP). My long term goal is to become a Merchant Marine and to do so i must attend Texas A & M Galveston extension for a degree in Marine transportation.

I went the GED route so i do not qualify for the first method of acceptance which is being top 10% of your class in high school.

But Texas A & M does have the Transfer Articulation Pilot Program (TAPP) so i can go in as a transfer student if i earn 24 credits of transferable coursework in one of their participating community college here's the information that's posted on their website.

* have chosen and completed all requirements from one of the Texas A&M University program specific degree plans with at least 24 credits of transferable coursework that satisfies the degree plan (at the time of application) at a participating community college after high school graduation

* have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPR and a minimum 3.0 GPR for all courses attempted from among those listed in the chosen degree plan

* have met all transfer admission requirements (applications, transcripts, fees, deadlines, etc.)

I see that San Antonio College is listed on the Fema website as a participating school that offers a emergency management associates degree and it's also listed as a participating school for Texas A & M for their (Tapp) program.

I'm wondering if by taking a few clep test and applying the Fema credits to a associates from San Antonio College i can get something going in my favor? anyone has had any luck applying Fema credits to a school other than FCC and Tesc?

Here's the list from Fema

Red Rocks Cummunity College in denver will take up to 45 credits towards an emergency management assosiates degree. It's $15/credit to transfer the FEMA stuff. I'm fairly certain they would take 30 for elective credit towards a differant degree, but I haven't asked.

You do not have to transcribe it at fredric or anything, they take it raw.

My plan is to just take the general credits they want (eng 101, easy math, psych, sociology, humanities) and get a degree and get my computer science later. That way I can get everything transfered and get a degree ASAP, one semester.

I do think you can actually transfer all that credit in for the next-to-nothing $15/credit price even if you only take ONE class with them.

That said, I don't know if they are a "participating" community college.

This is an old post that was maybe in this forum? I'm not sure, but this is what turned me on to my current plan. The post is actually from a couple years ago I think, but I recently contacted them and it is more aplicable than ever:

ORIGINAL POST: ***source unknown(sorry!)***
If you have no college credits or transferable experience, and you need a quick degree, there is another option.
Red Rocks Community College has an Emergency Management Associate Program that will allow you to transfer ALL FEMA ISP Courses (up to 45 credits) for $15/credit.

This would fulfill your Emergency Management Course Credit, and your Elective Course Credit, requiring you to only take 15 credit hours of Core Classes.

Red Rocks requires you take 15 credits through them to attain the degree, however you can do them online.

It is conceivable to attain an Associate degree in 1 semester if you have completed FEMA courses.

In-State Tuition is $135/credit
Out of State Tuition is $225/credit

If looked at the first result on Google --and judgeing by your terminology I think you did--you should have opened the page.
School Accreditation
Red Rocks Community College reports that it is nationally accredited.

Red Rocks Community College is accredited regionally by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (NCACHE). The school is state accredited.
RED ROCKS COMMUNITY COLLEGE: from the EdRef college search directory

It's regionally acredited.
Just because they bothered for some reason to get the DETC onboard doesn't mean it doesn't have a regional accreditation. It is a major Colorado State community college, all general credits taken there and many degrees transfer in full to four year institutions in the state.

Here's an aditional source from FEMA

Red Rocks Community College is granted accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools

You shouldn't slam any degrees OKd by the DETC anyway, the only big downside is transferability. Employers usually don't know the differance anyway. It may not be for you, but it is worth plenty in the right context.

Yup, it's both. It's a brick sit down or correspondance State funded community college. It's the real deal.

Regional (in this case) = North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (NCACHE)

The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), also known as North Central, is one of six regional accreditation organizations recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Oh and incidentally, just as compounded proof of their tendancy to take non college credit for credit they are giving me credit for all three of my IT certs. Very few would give me credit for them (and they should!).

1 each x 3 = one class
(A+, N+, MCP XP Pro)

But that's one class I don't need to take when I get my computer science degree later.

Thank you for opening this avenue for me... now i most get back to the Fema credits :] trying to knock all them out within a couple of months... I'm guessing i could go to the Red Rocks route and apply at a different School in any case San Antonio does not accept the credits.

I emailed SAC and i'm still awaiting a response.
