Are there two right answers for this problem?
#1
This is a problem from the Peterson's Online CLEP biology test. It seems to me that both "c" and "e" are correct since viruses do contain RNA and their own proteins and enzymes. Is this just an error on Peterson's behalf, or am I missing something here? I am taking the bio exam tomorrow, and am just trying to make sure I have all my bases covered. I have scored 77, 66,and 67 on the three Peterson's tests. Am I ready?

Peterson's Practice Tests for CLEP Biology Test 3 - Section 1:

All of the following are differences between viruses and prokaryotic cells EXCEPT

a. prokaryotic cells can move and reproduce on their own.

b. organelles are not present in viruses.

c. viruses do not contain their own proteins or enzymes.

d. prokaryotic cells have surface proteins for docking to other cells and molecules.

e. RNA is not present in viruses.

The correct answer is C. Viruses can contain either DNA or RNA as genetic material, and some even have their own enzymes such as reverse transcriptase found in HIV. While viruses cannot reproduce or move on their own and do not have organelles, they do have surface proteins used for virus-to-cell recognition.

Based on your Peterson's scores, you are ready. I suggesting logging off and getting a good night's sleep. That's the only thing left for you to do.

the key word there is EXCEPT. so since viruses have their own proteins and enzymes, it is NOT a difference. I'm sure you passed the bio tet.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

bassinbros, your scores on the practice tests seem good enough to me. It seems like you have a good understanding of biology. I am sure you will pass this exam. Let us know how you do!

The OP seems to have understood the question. The OP said that he/she knew choice C was correct, but thought that choice E was correct as well because viruses can contain RNA therefore that is not a difference between viruses and prokaryotic cells either.

Yipee, I passed bio with a 75!! Thanks for everyone's encouraging words. When I chose "score my test" I was sure I had passed, but definitely thought I had scored in the low 60's. It was sure a surprise to see 75 pop up.

Congratulations! Great job and really great score, especially for biology - not one of the easiest exams!

The gist of what they want you to know is that a virus - alone- is harmless. It needs a host cell to "activate" or reproduce.

Oh crap, ignore me lol. YOU ALREADY PASSED!!! :hurray:
