BA in English – Professional Communication & Journalism Concentration
#1
So, UMPI looks great.
I don't know anymore if they accept international students.

I'm looking at a BA in English – Professional Communication & Journalism Concentration.
I think this is very hard to transfer in, and I need many courses from Umpi? (more than the minimum of 30 credits).

Also, I'm wondering if this program needs a lot of essay writing what slow's the course progress down.

Yes, UMPI does accept international students. They have pages on the regular UMPI website about it.

You will need to complete a minimum of 30 credits at UMPI. They offer every course required for the degree so it's not a problem if you're missing something.

Yes, most classes have papers. Every class has a Final Assessment. The Final Assessment is a paper, project, or exam. Most classes are papers. There are quizzes throughout each course as well. The quizzes aren't graded. They are not included in your final grade. The Final Assessment is the only assignment for the entire course.

Yes, I thought that they accept international students.
I think it is hard to transfer as much as possible for this program.

Keep in mind that the 30 credits is the bare minimum. Most of us completed many more. I completed 48 credits at UMPI in 3 terms. Everyone has to complete the GEC (UMPI's gen eds) and the UL courses. You must complete the vast majority of the UL credits at UMPI. Many majors also have a minimum number of credits which much be completed at UMPI. You can complete as many courses as you can in a term. You can complete most of the GEC through Sophia and a few of the general electives as well. I wouldn't complete the English Comp 1 or 2 class on Sophia. They're far less work and much faster at UMPI.

You will need at least one math class to fulfill the GEC. A term at UMPI is 8 weeks so 2 months. Some classes are really easy and others take more effort. They're not all equal.

If you can't complete more than 2 courses per month, you may want to rethink UMPI; especially this particular degree.  If you have to take 30+ credits there, that means that you'll take 5 months/3 terms minimum to do 30cr.  If you have to do more credits, you're looking at more terms, and at that point it starts to be expensive.

Here's some prices to think about, if you were to take 90cr through Sophia, Study.com, other alternative providers:

COSC tuition & fees for 6cr: $3,181
ONU 24cr $1,200
TOTAL for 30cr $4,381

UMPI 3 terms $4,200
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
EC tuition & fees for 7cr $5,300
Additional courses via alt credit will vary

UMPI 4 terms $5,600
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
TESU tuition & fees for 6cr $7,854
ONU 24cr $1,200
TOTAL for 30cr $7,854

UMPI 5 terms $7,000
UMPI 6 terms $8,400
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

So really, you need to see what you can bring in, and what it will cost and how long it will take to finish your degree at each school.  I would do a detailed degree plan for each school to see what you think you can do.
TESU BSBA/HR 2018 - WVNCC BOG AAS 2017 - GGU Cert in Mgmt 2000
EXAMS: TECEP Tech Wrtg, Comp II, LA Math, PR, Computers  DSST Computers, Pers Fin  CLEP Mgmt, Mktg
COURSES: TESU Capstone  Study.com Pers Fin, Microecon, Stats  Ed4Credit Acct 2  PF Fin Mgmt  ALEKS Int & Coll Alg  Sophia Proj Mgmt The Institutes - Ins Ethics  Kaplan PLA

Bear in mind that ONU may or may not accept international students and that's the cheapest way to meet the UL English requirements. Otherwise, that's another thousand or so for BYU UL English credits. Once you count the full cost of everything, even 6 terms at UMPI is still going to be cheaper than an English degree from TESU.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

You have to complete the majority of your UL's at UMPI. It's actually on your degree program form how many must be completed at UMPI. There's not a ton of UL English courses required so I would be careful taking UL's elsewhere.

BYU courses are not cheap so I'm always hesitant to say to take them. For the price of UMPI tuition, I wouldn't take BYU courses. I looked on StraighterLine and Study and don't see courses that would transfer in for the English courses. The course descriptions are pretty specific. A lot of community colleges offer American Lit and British Lit. Oddly, neither one of them is a requirement in this degree. It is an interesting mix of communications and English courses. It's kind of funky - not in a bad way. It definitely seems like a unique program.

I'm looking at COSC as well. I'm a writer in my country and I have a lot of communication credits. I hope when I'm evaluating this it's around 30 but that's not sure of course. So for me, it is a choice between "cheap" (COSC bals) or more my interest. But since English is my second language I'm not sure if a English degree is the right fit.
