CLEP taking questions
#11
Dfrecore offers good advice. Research into this or that test may be wasted time if your school doesn't accept the test or course. Check the catalog, and, if you speak with anyone at the school about what the school will accept GET THE ANSWER IN WRITING.

Also, is it the classes that you want to get out of, or do you want to get credit for the courses this summer? If it's the latter, you might want to try a local community college. For me, courses from New Mexico community colleges are less expensive than my local community courses, so I've taken some on-line courses with a couple of colleges there. The important thing is to ensure that your college will recognize and give your credit for the courses/tests.

Hey guys! Sorry for being off-touch for so long. I've decided to take the Sociology and Brit Lit CLEPS in August.

My question now is this: What are the best resources for studying? I heard of a few things, especially of this website where you pay 20$ and study through flashcards and questions... was wondering if there was anything free/more efficient?

Thank you all so much for your help!

The best prep I found for Sociology was this series of videos, I was able to score 80% on my Saylor Final

Thanks so much man! Looks good. Will be watching these videos.

By the way guys, figured out that the thing I was talking about was InstantCert. Lol.

Any other resources out there guys?? Preferably free ones? Smile

So I just heard about the whole CLEP program and it seems like an easy and effective way to get some easy classes out of the way. What are everyone's thoughts/comments on how hard they are, how to study, if any free resources are available etc? Right now I'm looking into getting out of these classes:

Sociology, Psychology, or Political Science
Natural Science
History 2000
English 2000

The History and English I'm not too worried about, but mostly the first two requirements.. So I guess 1 question is this:

Of the three (Sociology, Psychology, or Political Science), which CLEP should I take? Which would be easier? I have never taken any Psych classes but I am quite interested in the subject, and I am a pretty good student (just finished my freshman year in college with 3.9 GPA). I have taken a political science class, but the sample questions for the sociology test looked a bit too specific and a little hard. Also, the natural science CLEP apparently includes both biological and natural sciences. Kind of a bummer. I never really liked science. I did manage either As or Bs in high school and passed the Bio AP for my college.

Sorry for that rant. I really want to use my free time during the summer to get out of some of these classes. Thank you!

Welcome! And they're not nearly as hard as you might imagine. I took one as a "test" to see if it was doable - I read a discarded textbook that my employer threw away. I passed. It changed the trajectory of my life.
Pick 1 you're most interested in, and give it a try. Lots of resources are suggested here, but in short, you'll have to dedicate some brain space to the material. (you'll read about people who pass exams without studying, and as in life, most of us aren't so lucky- so study!) Good luck!

Freeclepprep.com may be helpful. No flashcards, but lots of other suggestions.

Often Saylor courses are poorly put together, but the Saylor Sociology course is pretty good, and I can recommend using it to study for the CLEP. The InstantCert cards are also excellent for this one.

Use the REA book for sociology. Put in a good, focused, long weekend of studying and you should be able to pass.

Just remember your mileage may vary. Someone will tell you a test was easy and you may find it difficult. When I look at the freclepprep list of easy exams I know they were not that way for me. I know nothing about business so those exams listed as easiest would be difficult for me. I know science so some of the ones listed as difficult were easier for me. Keep that in mind when you choose your exams. It is ~$20 per month but using instacert flashcards and the specific exam feedback can be well worth the money especially if it can save you time. A one month membership can be used to study for as many exams as you can fit in.

Will definitely be using this. It's free and looks legit enough. Thanks so much man!

I looked up the Saylor one and I found a LONG pdf for the whole Sociology unit. A bit overwhelming, so not sure how much of it I will be able to focus on, but I will try my best to take a look at it. Big Grin Thanks dude!

Excuse my question, as I am a newbie in this realm. What do you mean by "REA"? Is that the book that CollegeBoard offers itself? If so, I'm not too sure I can get it, since I am outside of the country right now and will only be back for 2 days before taking the test!

I see. It seems that I will only be able to afford 1 this time around, so I might not do InstantCert if I feel ready enough. Thanks!

UPDATE: I recently discovered that I will only be able to afford 1 test and thus, I think I will pick the Intro to Sociology one, as a lot of you have given free resources for that (THANK YOU!). I will be back in the US on Friday and am aiming on taking the test next Monday (or perhaps a few days afterwards). Crazy. Haven't really studied much at all, but I have been a good student on similar topics all throughout highschool and my first year of college, so I'm not too worried. I think. Ha!

PS: Just making sure: Is there a deadline on when you can sign up for a CLEP? For example, you need to sign up a minimum of 1 week ahead of the test date you want or anything?

Guys, thank you all so much! You are making this stressful time so much more bearable for me. I am immensely grateful.
