COSC Information Services?
#1
Hello all - I mostly lurk and am able to find nearly anything through searches (because y'all so awesome!), but alas, seem to have reached an impasse.

Looking at cost and forum feedback, I'm thinking I'll go with COSC, and out of their concentrations, Information Systems Studies seems to be best suited to my experience and goals. The problem I'm having is that I'm not seeing many options to meet the requirements.

I've passed Principles of Management CELP, so I think I've satisfied the Business or Organizational area. I plan on using ALEKS for the Statistics requirement (still have to do the math part of general ed requirements anyway; I'm trying to group things together so have put that off).

Using the Exam Master List, I figure the Intro to Computers DSST will satisfy the 3 Introduction credits, and it's likely the Management Information Systems DSST will satisfy the Database Management and Design (also 3 credits). Getcollegecredit.com lists the latter as UL, but it's looking like COSC considers it LL.

This leaves Logic, Systems Analysis and Design, the "two examples in the third column," and concentration-related electives, plus the fact that so far, not a single of the required 15 concentration-related UL credits seem to be satisfied.

Am I looking at this all wrong?

I still have the Communications, Math (again, will do ALEKS and knock them all out in a row once I have a plan), and lab courses toward the GE credits, but thought I'd make sure I'm on the right track and don't need to change my intended school or concentration first.

For what it matters, I've completed the following:

CLEP
Analyzing & Interpreting Literature
Intro to Sociology
American Government
Western Civilization I
Principles of Management

DSST
Business Ethics & Society (UL, but not concentration specific?)
Intro to World Religions
Astronomy
Environment & Humanity

I can certainly attach what I have so far as a spreadsheet or upload it to Google Docs if that would help answer more clearly.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and information!

DSST also has a new computer related exam. Not sure of the name of it or anything about it. That could possible fit into your plan as upper level. Also what about the free credits you can get from TEXX? Would those fit? Take a look. Oh yes and by the way congrats on getting those exams done. Good job!

Thanks, I'll make sure to check that out! I guess I forgot to add that if there are SL equivalencies, those would work, too, but the only one I see as applicable is their Principles of Statistics.

Ah, were you thinking the Fundamentals of Cybersecurity DSST? Looks like I'll have to contact COSC directly to find out. I wonder how it'll relate to the fact that they have non-credit cyber security courses... (Cybersecurity - Charter Oak State College)

I'm in Information Systems studies concentration. and I took the Management Information systems DSST for the introductory class, this was recommended by my advisor because I had advanced courses already. I needed that even though I had an Intro to Computer Science course at my community college because the Managment Information systems includes some business concepts. The Database Management and Design course is different than the Management Information Systems course, and could not be used for this requirement. So I think you might need the Management Information Systems course or DSST for the introductary course, but this will not fill the database design course requirement.

They used one of the programming courses I had taken previously for the Logic requirement. I am currently studying for the Environment and Humanity DSST, and after that only have a few classes left to finish.

I'm really happy with COSC and the degree program I chose, it has been very benefical to me.

So sorry, I hadn't logged in in a while. That's all very helpful, thanks! And very glad to hear it's working out well for you and you're happy with it.

Karenc3, what requirement is the Environment and Humanity DSST satisfying? Also, have you found any good courses/exam for Systems Analysis and Design or did you have something that satisfied it?

I am using the Environment and Humanity for the Global Understanding requirement. I took Systems Analysis and Design at COSC and I thought it was a very good course.

Good Luck,

Karen
