COSC & TESC Question
#1
Ok, now that I have finished my AS at EC I would like to continue on and get my bachelors degree. COSC has a program that seems to fit my needs but I don't see many people here that use them...why? I looked at TESC and they just like EC don't have a program that fits what I want to do when I grow up! LOL! Can I write to COSC have my credit eval done and get a projected course breakdown without paying any registration fees?

Is TESC better, cheaper or faster? I'm trying to figure out why there doesn't seem to be as many COSC students as there are TESC and EC students?

I emailed COSC last week to ask some general info but haven't heard back yet. I'm considering some possible B&M schools that offer distance education programs, but I'm not sure how they view CLEP/DSST/EC exam credits?

My goal is to try to finish my bachelor's degree in 12 months if that is possible? Any suggestions from those that are doing this or did this?

I welcome all comments and suggestions! Thanks!

Most folks simply don't like the notion of degrees in General Studies-- which is what COSC awards. No majors.

TESC may appear more "prestigious" to some because in addition to getting awarded a degree in a major, it has a "state college" name.

If you read around on the board a bit, it is debatable whether TESC falls into better, cheaper or faster. There are considerable numbers of complaints about response time from them, for example.

However, I have yet to hear any complaints about the utility of their degrees after they've been awarded!

I imagine you're more likely to hear back from COSC if you submit an application and pay the $75. It sounds horrible, but the truth is the college probably doesn't have budgets for handing out endless free, unsolicited advice.

Lots of people are doing it. . . . just surf the forums here!

COSC doesn't offer majors. It's a liberal arts college. They offer general degrees with concentrations rather than majors which probably turns most people off.

If COSC offered majors, it would be my first choice. From what I've heard, they have better "customer service", and I actually prefer the name Charter Oak over Thomas Edison or Excelsior.

Now I'm really confused. I thought a major was an area of concentration within your degree. COSC's catalog lists a BS in health care admin listed, which shows a bachelor's degree with a concentration in health care admin. That is the area I want to specialize in, so that seemed like a logical path. So can someone please explain the difference? This is the same way EC showed their BS degree with a focus in health education. What is the difference in the degree level and employer response? The issues with TESC in slow responses and slowness in posting grades was one reason I wasn't considering them, besides I couldn't find a suitable degree option. Thanks for the info so far, but if someone can clarify this further I would appreciate it. Thanks!

TESC offers both a BSBA in hospital healthcare admin: Thomas Edison State College | BSBA in Hospital Healthcare Administration and a BSHS in health services admin: Thomas Edison State College | BSHS in Health Services Administration . A degree from COSC is a BS in general studies with a concentration in *whatever*. At least from what I've seen the degree programs at EC and TESC are more structured. At COSC if you can convince them a class fits within your concentration, you can use it. Maybe I'm wrong. In regards to how employers feel about the difference, can't tell ya that either. If they offered declared majors though they would've been my first choice as well.
I m edumakated thanx to distunce lerning.

Is EC considered a general studies degree too? I'm now worried about employer acceptance of the BS degree. The problem is that the COSC concentration plan of study area covers exactly what I do and what I want to keep doing, except on the teaching side. I had considered the EC BS in health education, originally since I just finished my AS degree with them, but it didn't focus on the areas of allied health I teach ie: the medical billing / admin side. I had hoped to complete my BS degree the same way I did my AS degree, but now I don't know if that is possible. Can you take a general studies BS and apply for a second BS degree with a B&M school and get a dual BS by completing just the declared major requirements? I'm just trying to figure out how this might work?

No. EC and TESC both offer "regular" degrees with majors, and are considered just as valid as your local B&M college's degrees/majors.
