The tests are still open book, and they allow you have at least one sheet of notes in front of you. The thing they are there to prevent is to ensure you do not look up the answers on Google.
I have taken Intro to Environmental Science, Intro to Religions, and now am finishing up my SL career and Associate's degree with American Government. Straighterline has been a godsend for my degree aspirations. I now have completed all of my prerequisites for my degree, and when they distribute them for my B.A., I might only need a language CLEP to fill in the blanks. :-)
Hope this helps you.
But what about if you have the book on your ipad or kindle? I'm curious because I bought the Sociology book for the kindle app on my ipad so do you know if I would be able to use that as my book? (and for the record I already passed this class prior to the new madate of proctoring, but I am asking for future reference in case I take another class)
Thanks!!

You'd have to contact SL to check their policy on that. I know that TESC didn't let me use either of those when I took an open book TECEP. Not sure whether SL allows it or not.

As it happens, I just submitted that same question to StraighterLine earlier today (as I prefer using eTextbooks and wanted to know the policy), so I will provide an update once I receive a reply.

So I asked Straighterline about using eTextbooks on my iPad, and this is Straighterline's reply...
Quote:ebooks are allowed: see http://www.straighterline.com/how-it-works/online-proctoring/exam-proctoring-details/.
Generally we had assumed that access would be on your computer while taking the test. I believe that would be the best way to use them while taking and exam. Allowing another device to be used (that's not easily visible to the Proctor during the exam) is not currently permitted.
In short: ebooks yes. iPads no.

This is unfortunate for me, since I use my iPad for all my eBooks (regular books and textbooks) and I don't know that they are always in an interchangeable format (some are iPad apps and I have no idea whether they have a PC based option), but it's nice to know. I'll probably just need to focus on using traditional books for now.

Bummer, because I am in the same boat. I wouldn't buy a reader just for that purpose when I have the ability on my ipad.
