I have a backup phone from this company. They make money on overages, so you have to be disciplined, but I've never paid anything more than the initial phone.

T-mobile also has free data for life on tablets that run on their service. I'm sure you could hunt one down. It's 200 mb free per month. I have two and it is good for just random surfing in the car.

I also highly recommend the bogleheads forum for frugal living:

You don't have to spend $300 on food a month. Some people spend under $100 for 1 person, but it's harder. You can be comfortable around $150-$200 a month.

There is not a lot extra for school. Will you be going into debt then? Also, do you have existing debts you pay on, like a monthly credit card, paying someone back?

No car payment? Gas or regular transportation fees?

Fortunately, I don't watch very much television, I prefer to stay busy.
