Cheap, non-testing online schools
#1
So, my sister has come to realize that working full time and going on campus are not the easiest thing to coordinate. So, she is seriously considering online college, naturally I am scouting about for her Big Grin She has an AAS (I believe?) in Sign Lang. Interpreting, & is looking to get a BA in English (other possibilities include Linguistics, possibly Psychology). She has no testing credits, so that's not a factor.

So the criteria are:
-Affordable
-Have one (more would be very cool) of her degree options
-Accept CC credits liberally
-Would be very cool if BA has minimal math/science requirements

Fire away, mates!

Lamar University Academic Partnerships

Welcome To Ohio University

Drexel University | Admissions | Online Education

If you are going to spend the money on an education, get your money's worth. Many people who hire prefer degrees from universities that have dorms and athletic teams. You can disagree with this in principle, but if the people doing the hiring prefer it, it doesn't matter if you think TESC or Excelsior or Phoenix is just as good.

Wow. That was pretty harsh. Care to point out any place that specifies that TESC, Excelsior or Phoenix aren't preferred? Granted, I can believe that this DOES happen, but I hardly think that it's either A) the norm, or B) worth the difference in price you are going to pay for the prestige of the brick and mortar schools.

School reputation does matter, but none of the above have a bad reputation in my experience. Other factors may keep you unemployed and a degree is not going to get you a fantastic job on its own, but I've seen nothing to warrant the bleak outlook you just indicated.
I'm an engineer. Go figure.

I can't say off the top of my head if it meets all of the OP's requirements, but the University of Illinois-Springfield has an online BA in English, and I have heard very good things about their online programs. That would be the first place I would look.

If you are going to truly get your money's worth, and you consider the value of time invested....a practical solution may be to earn an undergrad degree from one of the Big 3 in the next 6 months to a year ( for about $6K ) then invest your time and money in a Masters from a tier 1 / tier 2 school.

Dude, I did not ask for opinions, I asked for school recommendations. Why are you even on this forum if you don't approve of online education?

That program looks really good, but as a non-IL resident, it would work out to about 15k a yr, which doesn't work.

Here's the deal, she can go to OSU for approx. 10k a year. So the whole point is to find something cheaper than that. And online.

I'm not sure on how much research you have done but I pulled up this site:

Ohio English / Literature Colleges and Ohio English / Literature Schools | USCS

I hope this helps some as I don't know many other schools other than my alma mater. Good luck
Associate of Arts Degree: St. Petersburg College, May 2007
Bachelor of Science Degree: Florida State University, August 2010
Master of Public Administration: South University, June 2011 (or sooner)

CLEP:
Intro to Sociology (52)
Intro to Educational Psychology (?)

Troy University has a very affordable ITP, but if she already has the skills (and her NIC), that would likely be a waste of time.

I have searched extensively and can assure you that a DL BA in Linguistics does not exist in the USA, but can be dont through UNISA of South Africa or the University of New England of Australia. UMass Boston has an MA in Applied Linguistics. A simmilar program could be one in communicative disorders, such as the one from Utah State University or Eastern New Mexico University. It's called "communicative disorders" but the curiculum looks a lot like applied linguistics.
