Cornerstone Requirement at Charter Oak
#1
Why does it say 1-3 hours? If a student needs to meet this requirement for an associate's degree, do they have to take a 3 hour course from CO? Thanks.

Quote:Information Literacy (1-3 credits)

Students will be able to locate, evaluate, synthesize and use information from a variety of sources and understand the ethical issues involved in accessing and using information. This requirement is satisfied by the Cornerstone Seminar and/or the Capstone course

Not sure why they decided to put 1-3 hours there, but yes you do have to take cornerstone at COSC for any of their programs.

It's for sure 3 credits. Son #2 is doing it now. I don't know any way around NOT doing the Cornerstone, so that's a strange way for them to list it. Was the cornerstone always required? Maybe it didn't use to be...?

Do you know if there is any class you can sub for the Conerstone class? Another class through COSC? I just cringe when I read the description. My son will not need another "learn to research + write" course. :/ Paying 1,200 for it seems insane. He will jump through the hoop, if he has to, but it sure seems like a waste of time and money.

For sure you have to take it- everyone does. I'm happy to copy/paste the outline for you to look at. It's not hard at all, but a little time consuming and does cumulate in a final research paper.
They are on week 3 and the basic breakdown is: read the assignments, post to discussion forum (a little more involved than he was used to- they are requiring MLA format and citation in the forum posts which have also been kinda long 150 words per topic and averaging 2-3 topics per week, of course reply to others, etc.) then a homework assignment of some kind - the one he just did was a research proposal, and finally a quiz. The class is 8 weeks, and my son works full time but has managed to get all of his work done allowing M-T-W mornings.
