I was wondering if anyone has received college credit for Toastmasters speeches? I was a member for 2 years. During that time I gave 20 speeches, participated in a speech contest and did impromtu speaking every week at our club meetings.
It would be nice to get credit for something I have already done!!!hilarious
Thanks!

I'm not sure, but I've highly considered joining Toastmasters. What kind of speeches did you give and how is it set up?

When you join you receive a manual containing 10 speech projects. The first is called the icebreaker; you just tell about yourself, get used to speaking etc. Then you move on to things like using correct body language and hand motions, using correct words, persuasive speaking etc. All these speeches are 5-7 minutes long and there is a timer that gives you green, yellow and red flashcards at certain times to help you learn to time yourself. The last speech is 8-10 minutes long and you are to inspire your audience. After that you can branch out into more specialty speeches (I did Humorous Speaking and Show What You Mean manuals-5 speeches each, my dad did 2 on business speaking) It is really fun...on one of my speeches in the advance manual I demonstrated how to make homemade bread, another how to decorate a birthday cake. It really takes the butterflies out of speaking in public, and gives you a lot of confidence! Go for it!!

AnneGirl,
Thanks for the info. Have done alot of public speaking and have considered Toastmasters as well, but our closest group is 45 minutes away and gas, OH! Your first hand knowledge was helpful.
My mother enjoys making bread, too (she recently got a Nubian goat and the goat milk really adds to the bread! She doesn't use a machine, but kneads it by hand). What are we gonna do with these homeschoolers!
hilarious

No kidding! (pun intended!!) I had Nubian Goats for several years! The milk is great! My goats were registered so I had my own little business selling the kids. One of my goats had a record 4:eek: kids in one batch!
Toastmasters is great...just wish someone had info on a college that granted credit for it

Well I'm thrilled that you enjoyed it so much. Did it cost $$? Are you still a part of it?

I am not a part of the group right now. The one in my town kinda died out and I don't want to drive to Boise (45+ min) every week. The membership is, if my memory serves, under 30.00 for a year. That includes your first manual. After you finish the first manual (10 speeches) they give you two advanced manuals of your choice. If you can find a motivated group it is great fun and you will learn a lot.

Can I get credit for Rotary? I was their exchange student 12 years ago and did a couple of speeches.
Also, I rode my motorcycle around the state, that should be worth a couple of LD's... you never know with this online "education"

Excelsior gave me 12 credits for talking in my native language for 30mins.

You can take DSST: Principles of Public Speaking test and maybe have a leg up on it.

Thanks for the tip! Has anyone taken this course? I have only done CLEP tests so I am not sure what to expect with this one!
