Hi everybody,

It's been about a year since I was on these boards, but it feels like yesterday. Anyway, I earned a BS from TESC and am now thinking about an MBA or maybe Masters in Technology Management.

Just wondering if anyone had some good school suggestions. I'm wondering if online is the way to go for a Graduate Degree. Worried it won't hold enough weight.

What do you think?

Thanks!

Here is my plan... As soon as I'm done with the degree I'm starting to study for the GMAT. Since I'm doing pretty well with exams I'm not afraid of taking one more. You can have them send your score to five schools for free.

I know some alumni from a couple of Ivy League that are coaching me through the process. For me it's kind of like the George Kastansa school of parking - Start with the dream spot and make concentric circles outward...

The 'weight' of the degree depends on what you want to do with it. If you are trying to get a position at Goldman that may not be the best route. If you are looking for an internal position at a current employer it may be perfect.

Have you thought about a MS in your undergrad major, information systems? There's plenty of schools that offer degrees in IS; Dakota State comes to mind. If you're academically brave (or crazy) enough you can continue to a Doctor of Science in IS as well with them. I guess you need to decide if you want a technical masters or a general business masters. A MBA even with a focus will be a lot more management and business oriented than a masters in IS. I'm currently doing a Masters in Technology Management with UMUC, and it is barely technical. The emphasis is on the management of a technical company/team. However, this isn't a degree to expand on the technical nature of a particular discipline. I am crazy enough that I am probably going to work on a technical masters in engineering after I graduate from UMUC just to get the best of both worlds. If you want to do both, maybe you can find a MS/MBA dual program that will suit your needs. Of course, budget and your individual needs will probably decide your final path. Good luck!

Also if you're looking for a dual program, you can check OK state dual MBA/MS Telecommunication Management program. I don't know your financial situation, but from what I've read, it's a pretty good degree path that covers both the technical and the managerial aspect of telecommunications. Here is the url if you are interested. Also, for active duty military, you can't beat the price.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going back and forth with MBA versus Master in Tech Management. It's mostly to move up within my company, but of course I may move to a new company at some point and want it to look good on my Resume. I was looking at SUNYIT or maybe TESC Master in Management.

I'd get an MBA instead of an MS in Management. An MS in IS/MIS is also good if that's your field.

UMUC has an interesting dual MBA/MSIT plan. 8x 6-credit courses for the MBA, plus 6x 3-credit courses for the MSIT added on. I was at one point interested in the MBA + MS Cybersecurity Policy route.

They also have a MS Tech Management w/ concentrations in Emergency Mgt, Homeland Security, IT, etc.

Dual MBA options

Might be worth a look.

All great options. The key is to pick one you can finish and actually do it!

Once you get an MBA you might want to do a PhD or DBA or another MS degree. I haven't finished my MBA (just started 2 months ago) and I am already contemplating my next move!
