Distance Learning in Florida
#1
Hi all,

In Florida, a group of representatives from approximately 40 schools have developed a single website where a person can find classes and degrees offered by those schools. Tons of information can be found there. While there aren't degrees that can be completed by 'testing out'. There are plenty of degrees that can be completed entirely by distance.

This is great! And it includes ALL schools in Florida, not just those distance learning giant advertisers (U of Phoenix, Capella, AIU, etc.). There should be a national database like this one; if there is please post.

In response to anar579, one can find a semi-complete regional list from the Southern Regional Education Board here. Covers AL, AR, DE, FL, GA, KY, LA, MD, MS, NC, OK, SC, TN, TX, VA and WV. This list is not comprehensive. For example, a number of programs at universities in Texas are not included.

I just wanted to bump this old post for those who are having difficulty finding a course to fulfill a particular requirement for their degree program--especially those requirements for a major for which there may not be a credit-by-examination option.

Students enrolled at Excelsior have the option of searching for a specific type of course, and Excelsior will search not only EC courses/exams, but many other schools, as well. Those who aren't enrolled at EC can post their request here on the DegreeForum and will probably find someone at EC willing to run your search for you. Also, often just posting here will get a response from someone who is familiar with course options for the specific requirement.

Another option, which is well worth considering (in my opinion, anyway) is the Southern Regional Education Board's Electronic Campus. It's a partnership of many, but not all, colleges and universities throughout the southeastern United States which serves as a database of online learning options. You can search for courses, and it will list only online courses at a variety of schools. Many of the schools waive out-of-state fees for their online courses, and some waive out-of-state fees for residents of certain states only. Note that many of these schools change course offerings from semester to semester. Also, you can search/browse online degree programs, which may prove helpful for those interested in online graduate study. If you have a specific requirement that needs to be fulfilled and want to take a course online, it's a good place to check.

The Florida Distance Learning Consortium is a similar type of database, which is comprised exclusively of courses and degrees at schools in Florida.
