Last week many helped me we were totally thinking about going to TESC, but saw that COSC has similar degrees to the ones my kids want to take. The cost isn't that different. Do they accept up to 90 credits? They also accept students from age 16 and up, which is great for our family.
We are CT residents.
I did write to them and received a message back. It seems they are pretty flexible to the classes they accept, is this correct?
We are a bit confused on how their program works. It looks like they focus on GENERAL courses, then they have to focus in on their majors. Just one question they require this • Oral Communication (3 credits)
Examples: Principles of Speech, Principles of Public Speaking. (Will a straighterline course on Intro to communications work for this?)
I see their MAJOR required courses and am a bit confused how do we break them down further instead of general info?
Does anyone have the breakdown information for the Business degree, as well as the Information Tech Degree? I understand the business requirements, they seem straightforward.
Business Degree info from COSC: Then the General Liberal Arts
Financial Accounting (Can be done through SL)
Managerial Accounting 9 (Can be done through SL)
Information Technology Management Information Systems (Can this be a CLEP)
Organizational Behavior (Can be done through SL)
Principles of Management, Introduction to Management (Can be done through SL)
Principles of Marketing (Could this be business communications?)
Business Electives - upper level 12 Business or Economics subject areas including Human Resources Management and Leadership. It is highly recommended that an international focus be included.
Capstone 3 MGT 499 (Culminating course in concentration- this has to be done through COSC, correct)
Macroeconomics (Can be done through SL)
Microeconomics(Can be done through SL)
Information Tech Degree:
Intro. to Information Systems* or Introduction to Information Technology* (Is the intro to computing DSST)
Logic* 3 credits Programming Logic, Philosophical Logic, Digital Logic, Mathematical Logic (Please explain more...HELP)
Introductory Statistics (Completed SL)
Elementary Statistics (Not sure if this has to be taken too?)
Database Management and Design (Is there a CLEP or DSST for this or class like SL)
Systems Analysis and Design (Is there a CLEP or DSST for this or class like SL)
Two of the examples: 6 credits
Computer Organization, Computer Networking, Software Engineering (Is there a CLEP or DSST for this or class like SL)
One or more of the following business or organizational related courses 3 or more credits: Accounting, (through SL)
management, (Through SL)
Marketing
Finance (Personal Finance through SL or Finance)
Strategic Processes
Electives in Information Systems 3-9 credits (Suggestions please, would this be like Technical writing?)
Capstone 3 credits ITE 499 (Culminating course in concentration) (Must be done through COSC, correct?)
My son wants to know if he can take C# and if that would count. Can he do C++ too?
Will receiving Certificates count towards credits?
I saw this on the COSC site, I don't see ACE credits for Straighterline. Does anyone know how those credits work towards the degree?

COSC is very flexible. They are really good when you talk them. Everyone I have talked to has been really helpful. I probably had more questions than anyone else ever to call them. I was very confused.
Basically I was told that if the requirement says "Financial Accounting" and you find an exam like a CLEP that is titled "Financial Accounting," they will accept it. I think that they treat SL the same way.
You can take UExcel exams in Wallingford and Danbury. I am sure other towns too. Excelsior College | Credit by Exam
The Cornerstone and the Capstone are the only two classes you are required to take AT COSC.
Good Job. Keep up the good work.
TESTS PASSED
Intro to Law Enforcement (70) DSST, Criminal Justice (461) DSST, US History 1 (71) CLEP, US History 2 (66) CLEP, Civil War & Reconstruction (67) DSST

As stated previously, COSC is very liberal with accepting credits and the only classes required with them are your cornerstone and capstone. I earned my AS through them and only took the cornerstone course, everything else was transferred in.
The setup of requirements is very similar to TESC with regards to the general education requirements and concentration requirements. COSC has concentrations instead of majors, but their Business Admin is changing to a major this year. Did you look through the catalog? Here is the page with the skill area requirements:
General Education Requirements - Charter Oak State College Catalog
COSC does follow ACE recommendations for classes/credits. Go to the ACE page at
ACE CREDIT | The National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training | Find a Course or Exam
and type in Straighterline
I didn't have any problems with my courses from SL being used at COSC. The SL religions class was not listed as being transferrable to COSC, but I called the Registrar's office, read them the syllabus info and got approval for it. Just be sure what you want to take transfers in appropriately. If ever in doubt, call. I had a great experience with COSC and everyone there was always helpful.
I will send you a PM.

Do they accept up to 90 credits? --> They accept over 90 credits. I transferred in between 140-160 of over 200 (long story why I have that many). They probably would have take more but they stopped because they didn't apply to the degree. What really matters is how many of those 90 credits apply to the programs your kids sign up for.
We are CT residents. --> In state tuiton.
I did write to them and received a message back. It seems they are pretty flexible to the classes they accept, is this correct? --> I found them very flexible.
We are a bit confused on how their program works. It looks like they focus on GENERAL courses, then they have to focus in on their majors. Just one question they require this • Oral Communication (3 credits)
Examples: Principles of Speech, Principles of Public Speaking. (Will a straighterline course on Intro to communications work for this?) --> General ed requirements, concentration requirements, Upper level course requirements, general electives, and free electives. Someone already mentioned the SL equivalency: Charter Oak State College Course Equivalency Guide | StraighterLine You may also want to review this document for other CBE options: https://www.charteroak.edu/current/acade...r-list.pdf
Does anyone have the breakdown information for . . . the Information Tech Degree? I understand the business requirements, they seem straightforward.
Information Tech Degree:
Intro. to Information Systems* or Introduction to Information Technology* (Is the intro to computing DSST) --> I used an Intro to IT class for my AS for this requirement. I would look to DSST, CLEP, or TECEP.
Logic* 3 credits Programming Logic, Philosophical Logic, Digital Logic, Mathematical Logic (Please explain more...HELP) --> This one confused my when I applied. Thought I would need to take a "Logic" class, but they accepted Programming I from my AS.
Introductory Statistics (Completed SL)
Elementary Statistics (Not sure if this has to be taken too?) --> you just need one. They are giving two examples of what will met the requirement.
Database Management and Design (Is there a CLEP or DSST for this or class like SL) --> Not that I know of. I used another class from my AS.
Systems Analysis and Design (Is there a CLEP or DSST for this or class like SL) --> Look at the CSU Global posts. Might be something there, but you will want to get it approved by COSC first. I used a class from my AS.
Two of the examples: 6 credits
Computer Organization, Computer Networking, Software Engineering (Is there a CLEP or DSST for this or class like SL) --> Took Software Engineering at COSC. Computer networking was covered by a combination of two certification exams. Networking TECEP may fit in here.
One or more of the following business or organizational related courses 3 or more credits: Accounting, (through SL)
management, (Through SL)
Marketing
Finance (Personal Finance through SL or Finance) --> I had taken Finance when working on a business program.
Strategic Processes
Electives in Information Systems 3-9 credits (Suggestions please, would this be like Technical writing?) --> No, I don't think techinical writing would work. These are other IT/IS classes.
Capstone 3 credits ITE 499 (Culminating course in concentration) (Must be done through COSC, correct?) --> yes, must be taken at COSC. Ask me about it next week. Don't forget about Cornerstone, that must also be taken at COSC.
My son wants to know if he can take C# and if that would count. Can he do C++ too? --> Maybe, probably. I know they are two different languages, but if the Class is Intro to programming using C# and the other is Intro to programming using C++ will COSC see them as different classes. I would be careful there.
Will receiving Certificates count towards credits? --> Yes, based on their ACE evaluations at the time the exam was taken.
I saw this on the COSC site, I don't see ACE credits for Straighterline. Does anyone know how those credits work towards the degree? --> see the straigherline link posted above. I used Business Ethics for the Ethics general ed requirements.
You asked a lot of questions, but never referenced the requirement for 30 upper level credits. 15 have to be in the concentration.

Upper level are 300 or 400 level courses and they can not come from a community college. you may see references COSC accepting up to 87 credits from a community college. the missing 33 credits are the 30 upper lever credits and the 3 for cornerstone.
Capstone is considered upper level so there are 3 of the 15 required for the concentration.
The 15 for my concentration were Capstone, Finance, Software Engineering course, and some older IT certifications. For the 15 outside of the concentration they were some chemistry courses, some business courses, and some IT certifications that did not fit into the concentration.
For CBE options, the one I saw on the master list is the DSST Cybersecurity exam. While it looks like a good exams, I believe there is a thread here about it being challenging.
For other CBE options, follow Sanantone's thread on CBU global. there are three exams there that may qualify as upper level.
MIS300EX: Information Systems Design and Management (3 credits)
MIS350EX: Information Systems Analysis and Design (3 credits)
MIS440EX: Cloud Computing and Big Data (3 credits)
There are not a lot of options in this area for Upper level CBE. I got lucky by having old certs that transferred in as 6 UL.

I was thinking about that last night. I found this thread: http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-tho...-cosc.html The one for Security for IT Professionals was transcribed as 2 LL credits for ITE 135 or ITE 145 which are kind of the same class and I could see that being an elective in the IS concentration.
Quote:For other CBE options, follow Sanantone's thread on CSU global. there are three exams there that may qualify as upper level.
MIS300EX: Information Systems Design and Management (3 credits)
If you look into this class at CSU, so how it gets transcribed at COSC. If it is MIS and ends up being LL, you are probably better off taking the DSST MIS exam.
Does COSC still accept FEMA for free electives?
I noticed something this morning that might make the program more friendly to CBE. Look at these two requirements "One or more of the following business or organizational related courses for 3 or more credits" and "Electives in Information Systems for 3-9 credits". Increase the business courses which have more options for UL CBE and decrease the IS electives.
