Excelsior AAS Nursing Degree online
#1
Hi guys

I am asking this on behalf of a friend.

She is considering taking the AAS Nursing Degree in Nursing from Excelsior. Has anyone here taken that? Did you have problems getting a job? Please share your experience.

Some states require extra requirements after completing this course.

My questions:-

1. Is it going to be a waste of money if she decides to take the classes online?

2. What tests are advisable to take from CLEP to help earn credits?

3. Is the ASS degree still recognized nationwide?

Thanks

Does she qualify to take the EC program? One has to be a licensed RN/paramedic/military mefic/rt to qualify, its a bridge program.

Not a waste of money if she gets through, its true a few states have additional requirements and I believe California has issues with EC, but there are thousands of happilly employed EC trained nurses out there.

You can use clep to meet pre recs, EC has their own exams too, straiggterline is acceptable to to a certain number of credits. All the nursing exams or classes have to be done through EC, there is a long weekend of clinical and a care plan course as well.

aAS just means associate degree, associate of applied science. Nothing illegitimate about that.
MBA, Western Governors University February 2014
BS Charter Oak State College November 2011
AS in EMS August 2010

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

Thanks for your reply.

She is not a registered rn or any of the above. So she wont be able to get in?

I checked it. Its like it will not be possible for her to get in because she does not have any licensure in any healthcare profession. Don't think they would consider her. Very frustrating

The program caters to a specific student.

The trouble for your friend is that clinical skills cannot be taught via the internet. They rely on you bringing that into the program.

I think there was one out if Illinois that brought you in for clinical but the balance was online. WGU has a similar program but you have to be in specific states to be considered.

WGU has a pre-licensure BSN program. Many of the general education and prereq courses can be fulfilled through testing and Straighterline. There is a clinical component to the program which is in part, as Rebel mentioned, why the program is only available in specific states. The classroom work is online but clinicals are done the same as in a traditional nursing program. Many hours with a clinical instructor/preceptor at a hospital taking care of patients, developing skills, and using the online concepts to create care plans that demonstrate an understanding of all aspects of your patient's condition.

I was a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy and eligible for the Excelsior program. Though, in my state at the time the BON would only allow Excelsior graduates that were LPNs prior to attending. I was also eligible to take the NCLEX-PN in several states. All of these situations came with limitations. I do not feel comfortable with limitations. In hindesight, there are things I did as a Corpsman that many nurses will never experience or understand. And though I spent over a year on a med/surg floor taking care of patients, starting IVs, passing meds, dressing changes, etc. it in no way prepared me to be an RN.

Are there any nursing programs in your friend's area?
