As it happens, Machine Learning is one of the courses that is not included in the free certificate list. Well, the Andrew Ng course at least, not sure about the others.
However, after submitting your school address for verification for the free program it should confirm that you were accepted or not. The next time you log in using that email address it will pop up something and move you into the Coursera for Students program.
You should be able to verify this by looking at the top of the screen (on mobile) or by clicking on the little icon in the top left of the website on the desktop version) where it should say "Coursera for Students" if the account is properly flagged and you're accessing the right part of the site. If you have a regular Coursera account as well as a student account on the same account, you may need to use the dropdown in that area to select the students' version.

That's correct. I realized it's not all courses free after I got my account to work.
Initially after verifying my university email address it still did nothing. It was when I entered my university email address into https://www.coursera.org/for-university-...e-students then it became clear.

Then I tried my tesu email address and it worked. You'll know it works because the Coursera interface actually looks different.

There is no reason not to trust them.
In most cases, Coursera courses are regular college courses, taught by college instructors, but with minor alterations to support distance-learning students. Since they are not for credit, they may use volunteer student aids and include peer review as part of the evaluation process. But you can still learn quite a bit if you take it seriously, and that is really why you take the courses. Of course, if you pay, you can also earn a certificate that is useful on your resume and LinkedIn profile, but to me, education is the key reason I am interested in Coursera.

Aside from the fact that it's not always true that "you get what you pay for", these courses are normally paid for. This is the first time that they've been offered for free. Paying for something directly never means that a thing is automatically better than something else that costs less or is available for free.

Coursera has expanded their Coursera for Campus program to allow university/college students to take 1 free course per year plus unlimited guided projects. It appears this will be their new indefinite program.
