FREE FEMA Courses and cheap college credits
#1
Hi folks,

Just checking in and wanted to provide a reminder to new members about FREE classes through FEMA. These classes can be taken for free online in a short amount of time.

After you take the free class online, you simply fax a form to Frederick Community College with your credit card number and they give you college credit for taking the course.

Excelsior gives you credit in the applied professional area for these courses.

They are 1 credit each and are great for quick credit. I took 13 of these and some I finished in less than 1 hour each. And I got some really great looking Homeland Security Certificates to show for it.

That means you can get 1 college credit in 1 hour.

Here is the info:

1. Take the class online through FEMA (NO FEE)

Emergency Management Institute - FEMA Independent Study Program

2. Print out your FEMA Homeland Security Certificate and place in your "I love Me" file or just hang it on your wall

3. Print out the Frederick Community College Credit Request form and Pay for your college credit. ($60 per unit--cheap) (You don't have to pay for anything until you want to get college credit. You can take the classes from FEMA for free.)

Frederick Community College charges the fee for "transcribing" the class for college credit.

4. Fax the form to the phone number on the form

5. Wait for Excelsior to add the credit to your transcript.

It is that easy. I strongly recommend at least taking 1 class this way. It is very fast and plus, it is some really good info to learn. At $60 per unit, it is not as cheap as a clep but much cheaper than most classes and much, much faster.

If I understand what I have been told TESC students do not have to have the credits sent to another university first. There is NO charge and your FEMA transcript can be sent directly to TESC, I believe these credits are applied to the free electives catagory for most TESC degrees.

My question is for the courses that are not offered online, how long did it take you to read through all the info before taking the test?

You are correct. I registered at TESC and Excelsior and they both accept them.

TESC doesn't require them to be transcribed which is a great deal. FREEEEE

I didn't take any classes that were not online. I took all 13 of them online and it was great. I did request a course that was not online and I think I got the materials in 3 or 4 months by mail, so I just thre it away and didn't bother.

There must be over 20 courses online so there is really no need to wait around for paper ones unless you really want to.

Yes, depending on the school. Our local community college and state university will take them. The type of credit you get depends on the school.

Great information.

To take FEMA classes do you need to submit the application first that's list on the web site? If so, do you have to mail it in and wait for a response? I can't seem to clarify this from the info on FEMA's web site.

Could anyone give a walkthrough of exactly how to get credit with this for tesc?

I keep finding awesome and cheap ways to get credit to finish my degree at tesc through this board - first aleks, then this. Thanks everyone!

Also, what is the quickest way to get through the online classes? I'm so close to finishing and I just want to get it over with....

So what do you actually have to do in the course. A credit in an hour sounds amazing!

Also, would there be a problem with me being 16 and still in high school. Would I need to wait until I enroll in TESC?

I guess do these count as free electives?

It seems from looking that you have to read a bunch of material and take a fifty-question test and get 75% right. It's a lot of reading, though, I wish there was some quicker way...but then again I am very lazy and really just want to get my last few credits done...
