Help! Taking DSST Management Information Systems MIS and CLEP Sociology on Monday
#1
I have thoroughly scoured this forum using search tools and looking at the thread name on all 50 pages of the general forum. I had to do that because, unfortunately, all the words in Management-Information-Systems are too common and yield too many unrelated results, and MIS is too short for the search function!

In any event, any advice on either exam would be GREATLY appreciated. I've thoroughly studied InstantCert for both and am about to try the CLEP Sociology practice exam. That's all I got. I haven't yet found a practice source for the MIS exam. I read all the conflicting opinions re. Petersons and plan to try that--I hope I have a link that works. Some of the historical info here is no longer valid.

Any info at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to InstantCert and this forum I did very well on my CLEP ISCA and DSST Intro to Computing so I want to keep the momentum going. Thanks!

Hi Michael,

IC was sufficiant for me to pass the CLEP Sociology. For the MIS, I recommend you also study the CLEP information Systems IC and use common sense, and you should pass this test as well.

Good luck,

In regards to using the search function, that's why we provide the Google search option. Google can help you to pinpoint pages a lot more accurately. With Google I was able to search both management information systems and MIS and come up with relevant results that were easy to scan.

Well, that explains it. I suppose if I had slowed down and noticed that it said Google SITE search I could have figured that out on my own. Thanks for the help.

For Sociology, Instacert and Petersens were enough for me to pass. The REA book helped alot also but you will be fine without it. I passed with the flu so you should be fine going in with a clear head Wink

I scored a 59 on the DSST MIS. I used both IC and Peterson's practice exams. My scores on the PPEs were 57, 52, & 44 respectively. I took notes on each exam and studied them prior to moving on to the next one; there was no value added. The material on the PPEs was much more difficult than the actual DSST. Studying IC alone would have yielded a passing score.

I will add,

MIS was the first test that I took. I have some background in computers but I only used IC to study for the DSST test and scored a 73

Sociology was the second test that I took. I only used IC to study that and scored a 66.

In either case IC was all that I needed.

Hope that helps.

I took MIS 4/2005 and got a 54 on the exam (An A by Excelsior standards) and I'm an average PC user. I reviewed about 1/2 of the Flash Cards on IC. I think a little commonsense goes a long way on this exam. Don't fear this exam! Good Luck and let us know how you do.

P.S. As soon as you can after the exam, "Brain Dump" as much as you can for other members of this forum.

I took the Sociology CLEP and the MIS DSST a while ago. I am pretty tech savvy, but the whole MIS field doesnt involve any computer knowledge. Its more the political side as my old System Administrator used to say, such as effective ways to roll out a new implementation. The DSST study materials here seem quite effective. As for Sociology, i just took that using my common knowledge of that area and aced it. So i have no idea how effective IC is on their clep materials. Are they very good? Even though i have taken all that i can in the CLEP area(not accountable in upper levels), i am curious.

Well--that's exactly the path I was taking. I got a 64 and a 60 on the first two Peterson's and I was just fixin to study the ones I missed. I know the IC material pretty well at this point. I'd really like to get an A on this so I'm hopeful that I get lucky with some of the extra Peterson's info--but I won't spend too much time on it in light of your experience. Thanks for taking the time to share.
