My two sons, ages 19 and 22, are both changing their minds so fast about career and education decisions that my head is spinning.  My advice is very tainted by my own experience.

Most young people don't know what they want to do. It can change any minute. Sometimes, it's better to wait before committing to a major. Work a couple of jobs, take some gen ed or LL courses, volunteer, etc.

As someone who has looked at many hundreds of transcripts over the years, I will have to agree with this.  I cannot tell you how many times students change majors, but it is A LOT!  I would stick with sanantone and hsfamfun's advice and do GE's and work before committing if you're unsure.  I also advise new college students to take a course or two in something that's actually a job before deciding on something if they're not sure.  Take accounting 101, and you can rest assured that you will either love it or hate it, and either put accountant at the top of your list, or cross it off entirely.  That is NOT a waste of time, to try things and narrow down the possibilities.

I also tell kids to take Major/Career Search as one of their first courses.  It can be a huge revelation to them.

I agree with Sanantone as well try out diffrrent LL courses that can fit into gen ed like intro programming, calc, history etc so he can get a feel for everything and OJT...
