How a Racist Whistleblower Unknowingly Exposed Academia's Structural Flaws

I don't believe that he was a run-of-the-mill fraudster; I think he was lying due to self-esteem issues. It also appeared that he was bleaching his skin. His friends and family members should have intervened and gotten him psychological help. Maybe they tried.

Is that a formal diagnosis?

Honestly, this is irrelevant and takes away from the second point you make. We don’t even know how he died yet and here you are jumping to diagnosis him from behind a computer screen.

He could have been diagnosed with a myriad of disorders and none of them would justify the attacks on him for being black. Honestly, if he were white, this wouldn’t have happened, because the guy who outed him was doing so to get black academics fired.

And who’s to say he wasn’t receiving help? Who’s to say his family wasn’t trying to help? They are irrelevant.

Immediately jumping to conclusions that he was mentally ill and that his family didn’t do enough is not something I see for white men caught in the same situation. Why is the burden off the University and colleagues?

I said nothing about how he died; I mentioned his pattern of lying. Nothing in my post can be construed as a formal diagnosis as no disorder was named. With that said, do you think that pathological lying is a normal behavior? Regarding his family, I wrote, " Maybe they did."

None of this would have happened if he hadn't plagiarized and lied, in the first placd. Nathan Cofnas was not the first person to find that Arday plagiarized. A professor and The Times of Higher Education also discovered plagiarism. The plagiarism allegations go back to 2023.

Maybe these are things you wouldn't say about White men, but I say stuff like this all the time about White men, and you know it. Cambridge is also responsible for not properly vetting Arday and the White professors they've had to fire after missing red flags in the hiring process.

Jack Grove's story of Arday calling the police on him gives some background on how others in academia found out about the plagiarism.

If he had had true peers and friends, they would have told him to quit his bullshit long before it got to this point. Instead, it seems that he wassurrounded by yes-men administrators that viewed him like a token black man. Look, kids, he even has dreadlocks!

Mentors and peers should have shut him down long before an outside investigator and the media got involved. That is the real issue here. Yes, he was afraud and a cheater, but I suspect many administrators choose to look the other way to meet DEI targets. This was not one individual cheating thesystem, but a systemic promotion of a black academic that made administrators and white peers look good.

DEI killed him.

To me, there is a certain level of BS that comes with academia. A lot of professors don't have much real-world experience, yet they are supposed to be teaching students how to succeed outside of academia.

I don't know what the DEI situation is like in the UK, but there are plenty of minority academics there who have had great success. So I don't think you can just blame DEI for what happened here.

I kind of wonder why the media decided to make this such a big story. It doesn't seem all that newsworthy to me.

Quote:LLM summary:

Here is a breakdown of several claims that have been challenged or remain unverified:

Athletic and Charitable Claims
  • 600 Miles in 6 Days: Arday claimed to have run 600 miles between Edinburgh and London in six days for charity. This would place him among the world's top ultramarathon runners. Some sources later changed the claim to 600 miles in 12 days.
  • 30 Marathons in 35 Days: He claimed to have completed this feat, adding that he suffered an epileptic fit and fractured his leg on the 21st marathon but continued to finish the remaining nine marathons.
  • Charitable Fundraising: Arday stated he raised between £5 million and £5.5 million for charities, including Shelter and Shooting Star Children's Hospices. However, a JustGiving page for one of his challenges showed only £380 raised.
  • Olympic Torch Bearer: He claimed that his fundraising achievements led to his selection as an Olympic Torch Bearer for the London 2012 Olympics.
  • WaterAid Volunteer: He claimed to have traveled to South America and West Africa to install water points for the charity WaterAid. WaterAid later stated that it does not send volunteers abroad.
Academic Claims
  • Plagiarism: His 2015 PhD dissertation from Liverpool John Moores University was found to contain more than 100 passages that were identical or nearly identical to a 2009 thesis by Paula Zwozdiak-Myers, a student at Brunel University.Further analysis found "puzzling similarities" between his work and other publications, including unattributed quotes.
  • Falsified Research Methodology: In a 2018 study, Arday claimed to have used NVivo software for data analysis and had a second researcher independently code data. He later removed these claims from the article.

Personal History and Hardship Claims
  • Childhood Development: Arday claimed to have been diagnosed with autism, global developmental delay, deafness, and dyscalculia at age three. He stated he was non-verbal until age 11 and unable to read or write until age 18. Former schoolmates provided conflicting accounts, with some remembering him as chatty and joking in primary school, while others supported his claim.
  • BBC's Seven Up: He claimed to have appeared as a seven-year-old in the BBC documentary Seven Up. The original series began in 1964, more than 20 years before his birth in 1985. The BBC confirmed he was not involved in their films.
  • Threats and Intimidation: Following his appointment at Cambridge, Arday claimed to have received multiple threats, including a bullet in the post, a masked man threatening him with a knife, and a severed pig's head delivered to his parents' home. He claimed the police traced the pig's head to a local butcher, but the Metropolitan Police "categorically denied" investigating, and the butcher denied the police had visited.
  • Corporal Punishment: He claimed teachers struck his knuckles with a pen at secondary school. Corporal punishment was banned in England in 1987, around the time he would have been two years old.
  • Brain Tumor: Arday claimed he had to relearn the content of his dissertation weeks before his defense due to memory loss following the removal of a brain tumor.

Notice the appended contact information for suicide prevention lifelines (like the Samaritans) at the bottom of that article, which apparently, in British journalism, is a standard editorial practice when a death is suspected or known to be self-inflicted.

Lol, are you Nathan Cofnas? You literally just made an account to backup the DEI narrative he espoused against Dr. Arday.

Nathan Cofnas is in philosophy and doesn't have any real world experience either. But why would you expect people to have real world experience in philosophy or sociology? These aren't exactly applied fields like business and certain subfields of psychology.

I do not see really see this hiring as a DEI issue; I see it as a prestige issue. There are many Black people and other people who actually have PhDs in sociology and cognate subjects, who would never get hired at Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, etc. because their programs weren't ranked high enough by QS or U.S. News. Arday didn't go to a fancy school, so he gained his prestige by telling fantastical stories.

Overt racists don't tend to be very bright; there's a lot of irony in that. If Cambridge truly wanted someone who was Black and/or had a diagnosed disability, they didn't have to hire someone like Arday. Arday should have been at the bottom of the pile of diversity applicants.

Note: Arday was not trained in sociology; he was trained in education.

Ghent University has suspended Nathan Cofnas. But they knew that he was a eugenicist and race realist when they hired him.
