What are the best online colleges?
#1
For someone who wants to do a lot of courses through Sophia, Study.com, etc. and certifications like those from CompTIA, etc. and wants to be able to transfer in a lot of credits from classes previously taken at offline colleges?

And being cheap/affordable would be nice. $300 per credit or less seems good though higher might be okay too.

WGU doesn't give you credit for a lot of courses you've take somewhere else, especially IT courses if they're over certain years old. So most of my credits don't transfer to WGU.

Is SNHU a good option? Do you have to write a lot?

We know lots of schools that will take lots of credits from prior schools and ACE; but none of them will just randomly take ALL of your credits.  ESPECIALLY old IT credits - you will have a hard time finding anyone who will take old IT credits if that's your minor.

Just found this on SNHU's website regarding transferring credits: "Some courses do have time limits to directly transfer in," Amazeen said. "For an IT course to transfer into a specific SNHU course, it would have needed to be completed within 5 years. If the course is over 5 years, we'll still give you credit for the course – but it would have to be an IT elective."

@whiverem, In addition to the information and links above, you should also take your time reading through the forum messages. You can also review the WIKI links on my signature as well. The more info you need to find can be found on the WIKI, I suggest reviewing a few pages and doing a search on the forum. If you still can't find the info, you can always post questions, someone will follow up with you.

What are the grades based on? Are there proctored quizzes, tests, or exams?

If not, are there still tests and do you have unlimited time to do them? Are they multiple choice, or do you have to write answers?

Are there mostly writing assignments? How long are they typically for Computer Science, Information Technology, or business majors?

Can you speed up and complete classes quickly, like you can with WGU?

Is there a set amount of tuition per semester or is based on number of credits you're taking? And how much is the tuition exactly for the majors I mentioned for a bachelor's degree?

Is SNHU easier or more difficult compared to WGU? Can you transfer most class from Sophia, Study.com, SL, CLEP and DSST like you can with WGU? Thank you.

You can NOT speed up SNHU. They only allow you to take two or three classes per semester. Assuming maximum transfer (90 credits), the fastest you can complete a degree from SNHU is one to one and a half years.

Cost is per credit. Total cost, not counting transfer credits, is around $10k.

There is a lot of writing, but I think some classes might also have exams? Unsure about that. LevelUP is our current resident "SNHU expert".

SNHU is not competency-based, you pay by the course. 8-week courses.

I don't think you can compare it to WGU, since it's completely different. No CBE can really be compared to a non-CBE program. Also, "easier" and "harder" are completely relative. Are you good at taking exams? If so, then WGU may be right for you. But you may find a non-CBE program that also does exams, in which case that school might be for you. But I think it's safe to say that if you are NOT good at exams, then WGU probably is not your best option.

I think that it's also difficult to get the max number of credits (90) transferred into SNHU, so the cost may be more than the $9,600 minimum ($320/cr x 30cr). If so, remember that every course you take there will cost you $960. It adds up.

We do have degree plans for SNHU. That makes it easier to get 90 credits, or thereabouts. Also, unlike WGU, SNHU does allow you to continue transferring in credits while you are an enrolled student.

If you want as few exams as possible, UMPI is probably your best bet.

If you want to avoid exams as much as possible, but still want a technical-type degree, TESU may be the way to go.

WGU is mostly for students who thrive on exams.

@whiverem, it's great you're asking questions to get more details on what SNHU/WGU and other institutions are like.  That's a great way to get some details on what is to come, but it won't get you very far to deciding on your institution.  You may want to tell us how your study habits are and anything else that can help determine your course of action.  My suggestion right now is to complete the homework below (template/addendum).

We're all here to help the best we can, if we get a clearer picture of what you need, you'll get a better sense of direction and advice to go along with that... It seems you're 'stuck' at the same phase as you were last year - still stuck at starting off, so you've stalled at the very first step.  Please provide us more details by following the template and last post addendum here: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...Area-works
