Anyone know anything about these? They appear to be free courses that don't result in college credit. However, if you take them, do a portfolio and pay a fee they can be used towards Purdue Global Campus. I wondering if they are good anywhere else. ACE? NCCRS? PLA?

Purdue Univ has acquired Kaplan Univ and is now called Purdue University Global. It also looks like they've acquired Sofia.org as well because the website references Open Course @ Kaplan and when you search for that its now Purdue University Global. You can get an AS or BS in Professional Studies through Open College(a subsection of Purdue University Global). A portfolio is basically the same thing as a PLA. You can pretty much use any decent, unaccredited course as the basis of a PLA/portfolio. However, most of these open courses will not translate into useful college credits because they're basic, career prep courses. Most of the other courses that are similar to a typical college course have many options that are faster and more transferable. College composition, for example, is easy to find as an ACE or NCCRS-approved course/test or a challenge exam from a regionally accredited college. In short, these open courses are essentially the same as MOOCs.

You can find the useful ones of these available in a multitude of places for free or cheap (less than $100/course), and the others aren't going to be useful courses for a degree.
