ITT Technical Institute closes all campuses

Everything ITT Tech students need to know now that the for-profit school has closed - Chicago Tribune

On 6 September 2016, ITT Educational Services, Inc., announced the closing of all ITT Technical Institute campuses, citing actions by the U.S. Department of Education. ITT Tech was found to be noncompliant with its accreditor, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, and unlikely to become compliant in the future.

One article I read said that students could apply to have their loans canceled or forgiven. A girl I worked with owed about 40K for bachelor in Criminal Justice degree . She got a decent job with a private security company. But it is also something someone with a community college associate degree could get. I wonder how they will decide whose loans are wavied and who still owes.

The Apollo group has gone from a public company to a private one I think... don't recall the full details, but they've been highly affected already.
I don't they'll shut down, I believe they've changed many of their ways; similarly to what EDMC has done to stay alive in this business sector.
Corinthian Colleges was the first major one to go, now ITT Tech, I wonder if DeVry or others are going to follow in that path...

From what I understand as far as the loans forgiveness goes if you transfer your credits, that's if you find a school that will accept them. No loan forgiveness. If you do not take your credits with you they will cancel your loan. Many people are saying just let the credits go and start fresh. So sad for so many people. A lot of unemployment is going to be happening because of this too.

I'd throw the 120 credits away, especially if I knew about this forum and SL, ALEKS, DSST, CLEP, PF, etc. to get the loan forgiveness. The era of a BA in 4 weeks is long gone, but it's possible to graduate with a BA in a year or less for a motivated student for less than $10k all-in.

For student loan forgiveness, if you already have your degree, or even have finished all your courses before a degree was conferred, it's too late. You have to have been a current student (or one on an approved leave of absence) within 120 days of the closure date.

Just a quick update the parent company is now out of business and there goes DWC as well. Talk about a quick turn of events.

Just curious what the general consensus is around here. Do you think this will have any negatice effects on schools such as the big 3? Do you think that once these for profit schools are eliminated, sights will be turned on Online institutions?
