The University of Kansas (abbreviated “KU”) catalog now includes a section for its upcoming Jayhawk Flex competency-based education modality.
The upcoming Jayhawk Flex programs are
Note that for the Flex degree you’re looking KU might offer elsewhere a similarly titled but differently structured non-Flex, non-CBE degree with a different course structure.
Each of the Flex programs is structured as a series of courses of 1 semester hour. Some of these courses are sequenced. For example, the MS in Human and Organization Performance Effectiveness includes three courses of one semester hour each constituting a capstone: Capstone Consulting Skills, Capstone Needs Analysis and Planning, and Capstone Implementation and Review.
Information about tuition and scheduling is upcoming, but planning documents indicated classic CBE priced at a flat rate per term rather than per credit.
The site jayhawkflex.ku.edu, which used to post internal updates but appears to have stopped updating circa February 2025, has a new announcement on its front page that the site is currently being updated.
Both education degrees are from the KU Department of Curriculum and Teaching within the School of Education and Human Sciences. The performance effectiveness and project management degrees are not from the KU School of Business, so these are not strictly AACSB. Rather, they’re from the KU School of Professional Studies.
The University of Kansas is its state flagship, AAU, R1, and currently US News National Universities #143.

I thought it was a "Masters in Ed, Performance Effectiveness, and Project Management" and thought "well that's different!"
It will be interesting to see what the pricing and term lengths turn out to be.

Also would be interesting to see if they allow you to take as many course as you like per term.

This is very interesting. I was actually putting together a list of programs offering non-traditional degrees (e.g., MS in Engineering, MS in Education), and then this pops up, and CBE too! Would be great if the pricing ends up being competitive with WGU and similar programs.

While I think we are still waiting for an official announcement, this thread had the tuition rumored at $14,000 per year. Not bad if you want the Kansas name in your resume for the level of school that it is.

I'll definitely be keeping my eyes on these. Curious to see how dividing the degree into 1-credit-hour courses will affect its pacing.
These are some high-quality degrees to have, too. HOPE and Project Management sound sound unique for the CBE format. Wonder if there'll be any "guinea pigs" telling us how these programs are.

Purdue Global offers some of its courses split up into “module courses” of 1 quarter hour each. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside CBE BS in Business Administration — not often mentioned here mainly because it accepts almost no alt credit in transfer — uses numerous 1 and 2 semester hour courses in the major.

Hello all!
I’m Dr. Ahmed Lachheb, and I'm an Associate Teaching Professor of Learning Design at the University of Kansas (KU) School of Education & Human Sciences. I'm the lead faculty for the new Master's program in Learning Design, which is competency-based, online, and flexible.
If you are looking for more information about the program or have questions, I’m happy to answer them!
Cheers!
-Dr. Lachheb.

Hi there! Here is the information about the cost and the number of courses you can take for the Learning Design program:
Costs
You pay one flat rate per term, not per class or credit hour.
- $4,165 per 16-week term (Fall and Spring)
- $2,083 per 8-week term (Summer)
Enrollment is structured as full-time for each term, allowing you to complete as many competencies as you’re able within that period.
Because tuition isn’t tied to individual courses, your total cost depends on how quickly you move through competencies.
Make more progress in a term, and you may need fewer terms overall.
