I just discovered that LIB-495 isn't writing a research paper but instead is doing actual qualitative research. My kid's instructor provided examples of LIB-495 research papers some of which were in the 100-200 page range. That's a lot of work. One paper was in the 30-40 page range. What is expected? What is actually necessary?

I'm doing mine right now. I'm not doing first-hand qualitative research, although a few people in my capstone group are; I'm using all secondary data sources.

Mine ended up being roughly 40 pages. A lot of it is repeated information, you'll see why when you see what is required in each chapter. I did a short survey using surveymonkey to support some of my paper but the majority was taken from other sources. The instructor stated that he didn't expect any original research.
Here's the breakdown of the course

Welcome to Research Writing, a unique experience that will make use of what you have learned in previous composition classes and teach you research skills related to your field of study. This course content differs from that of the typical English research writing class because you will not be writing a research paper, but you will be serving as a true researcher engaged in attempting to solve a problem based on certain assumptions related to the topic you have chosen. The course engages in a multi-disciplinary approach to research writing based on studentsâ major field.
The bedrock of this course is the use of field research, primary sources, scholarly writing and academic formatting to deliver information that supports an argumentative thesis statement.
Two types of research are known as qualitative and quantitative. You will be using only qualitative research once you select a topic related to your field of interest; next, you will create questions that you will answer through field research, which will provide you with primary source material (know as data), to support assumptions based on your thesis statement. This sounds very convoluted, but as you work through this project, you will find a rational structure to enable you to successfully complete this project.

The minimum page count is 25 (unless you're doing a Creative project) which I was worried about achieving, but I actually got over 50 pages easily. It is a lot of repeating, as others have said. My professor encouraged research of original papers, writings, and photos, as well as scholarly articles and papers. I also did a survey using SurveyMonkey.
