So, I am not looking for something to place on a resume, but my employer creates a file for each employee and includes all certificates and trainings completed. When time for promotions, they review the file for coursework or non-traditional classes related to the new job offering. I am wondering if it is worth it to complete a few EdX classes and pay for the cert to simply place them in my existing file.
Has anyone found that their EdX "certs" carry any value? I do not know of anyone in my office that has completed any of them.

If your boss doesn't care about the actual certificate (just that you completed the course), you can take any EDX course for free. You'd still have access to all of the materials and tests, just no certificate at the end. That might be another option for you.

I think it would also highly depend on if the class is relevant and useful to your position in the company(or the position you want to move to). My thought's with the edx platform always came to, "yeah it's cool, but is a certification for a not accredited mooc better than an ACE accredited online course from one of the other providers for a comparable price?"
There are a few course offerings on edx that can be used for credit, but they sometimes have other extra costs.
dfrecore is right, though the only one who knows if those certs are useful to your job would be your fellow employees and boss.

My 17-year old homeschooled son used Edx for many of his high school courses. He applied for an internship with a very good company that usually hires interns from the top students at a nearby college. He did have the advantage of an outside connection. He e-mailed them a resume that included links to about 5 of his verified certificates from Edx. Two were HarvardX and a couple other high ranked universities. He was about halfway through the interview process with them when he received notice that he was accepted for a summer internship at NASA. They agreed to complete the interview process when he returns. He had also referenced his Edx courses on his application to NASA. I can't say that this is what got him the job, but it is possible that it helped to have classes from top universities. He did not have any related job experience.

Very good point about some ACE courses being similar in price or cheaper. Thanks!

I like the HarvardX classes, I'm doing one now, and it does offer the verification, but I'm not doing it because there isn't a raise or a promotion in my future like there is in yours! If it really does value-add to your chances of a raise or promotion, seems like a very small price for a nice ROI.
I doubt that any or all of the certs would impress your boss- so if it were me, I'd be sure it presented me in the right light though- meaning, that it matched the type of classes or seminars my colleagues might be taking, or that might boost your ability to enhance my job skills in a way that benefits the company, or even to prepare for something that might be required at the next level.
