I know you said you didn't want to spend the time studying for a CLEP, but if you can get your hands on "The Complete Idiot's Guide to American Literature" I would recommend reading that and taking the American Lit CLEP. I didn't have any background with American Literature and never really read any of those books in High School. The Idiot's guide is a very easy read and touches on the basics that you need to pass the exam. Fill in the blanks with Wikipedia and I bet you could pass. I read the book over a 2 week period, reviewed for a week and then took the exam. 6 credits for under $150.00 total (Book+Exam) in 3 weeks. Can't beat that!
