Myths of Distance Education
#11
cookderosa Wrote:Other myths I've heard:

You can't study science via distance / can't take lab science- totally wrong. ...

have you ever made a thread detailing all the science courses you've taken, where you've taken them, and which nursing programs you applied to and accept your courses ?

because I know New York University Nursing program won't accept online courses (even statistics or nutrition or lifespan developmental psychology)
but Columbia University Nursing will (they even accept ECE Microbiology and Anatomy & Physiology)

No, but you can look through the archives and I'm happy to answer questions. I started taking my sciences in around 2008. I've no doubt there are schools that forbid online learning, but I'm not very good at complying. ;p

UptonSinclair Wrote:I have been thinking about the communication issues in online education and have a theory. I believe Excelsior and TESC both hurt the open exchange of ideas by requiring certain formats for their class forums. When one attends a college course, there may be a bit of formality within the classroom, but there is often chatter before and after class. This chatter is missing from online courses. I have been attempting to push more communication in a course I am in at TESC right now. We have a final project that I want to be able to discuss with my classmates. I was concerned at first that collaboration may be seen as academic dishonesty, but the mentor approved the thread.

soliloquy Wrote:None of the Discussion Boards I've ever taken at COSC required a particular format. I believe the only requirement is that your answer be substantive and that you respond to the post of three other students. What type of requirement does TESC and Excelsior have?

What's required in TESC is to answer some given questions or prompts, and respond to 2 or more other students. And people do that in many different styles. On the class discussion boards, you can be formal (like I usually was), or laid back, or very historical, or use modern examples, or use personal examples, the list goes on. Some even used smileys. Depends on the course and professor, who half the time didn't even show up on the boards, and when he/she did, was generally supportive of the convos and asked more questions; I never saw a professor reign in a conversation or tell someone to stop saying something.

And like Bricabrac said, there are other off-topic forums, ones for just your class, and ones for all TESC students. I've been on the latter and found there's not much traffic there, but I've used the former - in some of my classes we did go chat about things in the "class lounge" Smile

Ha! Class Lounge. Thank You Westerner!! I could not remember that darn thread title to save my life and it truly annoyed me. Well, guess it's now obvious I did not use it. Big Grin
