Need help with final 12 TESC credits...
#1
...Hello, I attended 3+ years at a traditional school, while I was there I started my own business and as that became very successful I left school. In the past few years I have moved up to excellent jobs in my chosen career but coming very shortly some opportunities for career advancement will require that I have finished my degree. I have been reading these forums for months but with this new opportunities my urgency has increased significantly and I was seeking advice. For my TESC evaluation I have 12 credits remaining for both a Liberal Arts BA and a BA in English. I have submitted all of my credits and tests except for my AP English exam from high school on which I scored a 3, so that does not factor in to the 2 evaluations below. I'm hoping someone has advice on which tests will get me through this the quickest and which route would be recommended.

For the BA in English I need:

3 credits of English Comp 101 (I'm hopeful that the AP English score works for this)
3 credits of Analysis and Interpretation of Literature
3 credits of Non-Western Literature
Liberal Arts Capstone (has anyone figured out any way around this? I hate this added requirement)

For the BA in Liberal Arts I need:

3 credits of English Comp 101
6 hours of free electives (anything in particular recommended here?)
3 hours of capstone

And just to answer a side question, for my career of choice there is no difference between an english degree and a liberal arts degree. I just need to have finished.

Any advice I can get on any of this would be greatly appreciated as I feel as though every resource I use gives me a different answer or points in a different direction, while the answers on this forum always seem to be the clearest and most direct. Thanks so much!

Hey Jakm13, like you are interested in doing, I got a BA in English from TESC. It's a great, flexible degree.

From my experience going through this same process, the College Composition CLEP can take care of Eng Comp 101. Analyzing and Interpreting Lit CLEP is the best test to take for the A and I of L requirement. As for Non-Western Lit and Lib Arts Capstone, there is no way around them (at least that I know of). I had to take both of those when I went through.

For the BA in Liberal Arts, for the 6 hours of free electives, I'd find a CLEP subject that comes really easily to you. If you're an avid English student (or maybe even if you're not) the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP is often considered to be the all around easiest one out there.

TESC counts the A and I Lit CLEP as LIT 291 and 292 so just make sure that nothing else you've done also counts as that on your evaluation and you should be good.

Hope this helps!

Another question I should have asked - am I right to be looking at TESC instead of Excelsior or COSC? I decided on TESC long enough ago that I can't remember what set it apart but the capstone requirement is a real killer, could I possibly be on a faster path with one of the other schools?

Well COSC requires a cornerstone and a capstone. Not sure about Excelsior.

As for your credits question, i'm by no means an expert, but for the English degree, the College Composition CLEP, Analyzing & Interpreting Lit CLEP, and the Capstone (required Sad) looks good. See Yanji's post for the Non-Western Lit suggestions. For Liberal Arts, you'll need College Comp CLEP, and Capstone. For electives you could do anything that interests or is easy for you. Some ideas of relatively easy options:
CLEP Analyzing & Interpreting Lit
CLEP Management, DSST Supervision, DSST Technical Writing (pick 2)
CLEP Social Sciences & History

OP, I strongly recommend you go for the BA in English over Liberal Studies... you're equally close to both credits and an English degree will be more recognised by graduate programmes than a Liberal Studies degree.

Unless I'm grossly mistaken, these CLEPs are about history and do not meet the requirement for Non-Western Literature. I think this is the one requirement for the BA in English other than the capstone which cannot be tested out and World Lit courses do not meet the requirement. You might want to try getting advisor approval for Native Literature in Canada from Athabasca University (self-paced) or Korean Novels and Multimedia from Binghamton University. (one month accelerated summer course) Otherwise, remember that TESC offer their own courses at decent tuition rates too... so you could always take one of their own non-Western Lit courses.

Whoops, my bad. Didn't read the question thoroughly enough—sorry! Pay attention to Yanji's advice, then Smile
