Online Organic/General Chemistry w/Lab
#1
Hello,

Anybody know of a school that offers an online course in Organic or General Chemistry that includes an online or some other type of lab?

It also needs to be 4 semester hours and able to start on demand or this summer.

Thanks.

You bet!
My favorite source:
New England University, School of Orthopedic Medicine
University of New England - COM - Online Education - COM Online Education
These are on demand, you can sign up anytime you want. You'll need a proctor. These are each $1200 but include the book and fees. These are virtual labs. Organic chem and gen chem both available.

I'm starting my 3rd semester here:
Ocean College Ocean County College and you can take gen chem 1 w/lab if you look under the "10 week summer" session list. I'm taking it too. This is somewhat cheaper than New England but not by much. The tuition will be $600 but you'll have a text, access code, and lab paq which will set you back about $400. These are live labs, you do them at home and submit photographs in your lab report. Ocean does not offer organic chem online.

Just wondering though, were you thinking of taking these classes at the same time? I think it would be pretty insane if you didn't at least take gen chem 1 before trying organic chem.....but the New England does not REQUIRE it, so technically, you can enroll simultaneously.

Good luck to you!

No, I have a General Chemistry from University of Alaska. The Nursing school I'm attending this fall needs a Gen Chem and a Organic Chem.

I am thinking about taking Organic Chemistry I and II (which have labs) from Mountain State University via independent study. I have not taken any courses from Mountain State and am wondering if anyone has (even if they were not Organic Chem or any other science)?

People over at the PAFORUM have taken a few of the Mountain State Science courses. One guy let me take a peek at the syllabus for Chem II. It looked do-able. Organic is going to require plenty of your time no matter which school you choose.

Word is Mountain State's online science courses are easier than UNE's courses, but you do need a proctor for Mountain State. Mountain State is also cheaper than UNE. Mountain State offeres a wider array of biology, Chemistry and science courses online. UNE's courses HAVE been taken by people who have used them to get accepted into both PA, Nursing and Medical school. UNE's class are offered out of their medical school. Mountain State's transcript won't say that you did the class distance. I am not sure what the UNE transcript says.

Here is the link to UNE : University of New England - COM - Online Education - COM Online Education

Mountain State : Mountain State University

Sing up for the PA forum and search for the thread in the pre-PA forum titled "Online courses-add to the list." It has a plethora of online courses that might interest anyone who needs science or math by distance.

sunnyjohn, thanks for that very informative post. My goal is actually to get into a MS program in Biochemistry or Biology, so obviously I need Organic Chem. I already have a bachelor's degree (in economics) so I might not actually need a bachelor's in biology if I have the right courses. I would like to keep the overall costs of taking the courses down, but since Organic Chem is so important, I also want to be sure I do it right. We don't have community colleges in Germany, so that greatly limits my options.
