Penn Foster Substance Abuse
#1
Does anyone know if TESC will give UL credit for the Penn Foster Substance Abuse course after it is ACE transcribed towards a BSLA. Any input would be much appreciated.

Hi Frankiebleyes,

What is a BSLA? I've looked and cannot find that program. Is it one of the Learner Designed Area programs.

If no one replies on whether or not they accept the PF course, give a call to advising with the ACE ICS # and they can tell you how it would transcribe.

That's almost certainly a "no". It's a 200-level course at PFC, and ACE reviewed for 3 lower level credits.

Thanks for the heads up on how it will transcribe. I did check the ACE site, but was hoping that since the DSST test was UL TESC might transcribe Penn Foster's course as UL.

As for the BSLA, my mistake I was trying to type BALA, or bachelor's arts liberal arts studies. I think that is how it is identified at TESC.

hey man - if you haven't take the PF course yet, i totally recommend just do the DSST so you have no worries

Also for that one, i studied for like maybe a max 3 hours - it truly is the easiest UL exam.

Not necessarily true. You could say the same about fundamentals of counseling 200 level lower level but it transcribes as upper level. Same with labor relations, compensation management and training concepts. All are 300 level courses at TESC.

Again OP, if truly interested, I would call advising as they have a list. And if the course is new, I recently chose one that was not yet assigned a sub, they quickly investigate and code. I think the course was coded within 4-5hrs.

Good luck!

KMM,

Remember, not everyone gets the same version of an exam. My version of the this exam (SI495) was not easy and must be new as it is not on the list (rev 20100120). Of all my exams fundamentals of counseling was the easiest. IMO, it depends on the individuals prior knowlege of subject and honestly the trick of the draw. Some of the exams have as many as five versions now. What questions are chosen for each version, who really knows?

I would love to check with advising to get the answer, but until I actually pay to register ($3,000.00), I cannot get an answer. If anyone is a TESC student and would find out for me I would be truly grateful. My son is not good at testing out but does well with course work, he is the one who would be taking the course. He needs three more UL to have his required coursework and then once we have the money saved, we both will register and graduate together. Hopefully by Christmas or New Year's as a gift to both of us.

Hi frankiebleyes,

Ok, just got off the phone. I already took the dantes so the conversation was interesting. She did not have the listing and because of the fact I've already taken substance abuse and am now working on BSBA she could not add to my eval to see where it would fall but said they accept all ACE approved credit. She asked me for the description of the PF course and I read it to her. She said it more matches up with SOS-304 Drugs and Society and that is most likely how it would transcribe. For the record TESC will only give credit for one of the courses SOS303, SOS304, or SOS305. Note taking two would duplicate but it also had a familiar ring as to the reason my dantes exam actually transcribed as SOS-303 instead of SOS-305.

It's up to you but from what the advisor said, it sounds like it would be fine for your son to take this course. I've had very good experiences with the PF courses.

PF Substance Abuse and Treatment in CJ (ACE ICS# 0179). Instruction: Major topics covered in course are the history of drugs and the nervous system's response to drugs, major illegal drugs, the science and treatment of drug abuse, drug law enforcement and policy. Description: Student will be able to outline the history of abused substances, describe the various kinds of abused substances, point out the social sciences that are connected with the study of illegal drugs, summarize the treatment of addicts and prevention of drug abuse, discuss how law enforcement should respond to the use of illegal drugs, and take a position on some of the hot issues presented in your textbook and study guide and defend that position.

TESC Drugs and Society (SOS-304) examines the impact of substance use and abuse on the individual and on society. The course provides a balanced account of the physiological, psychological, and sociological aspects of this subject, interpreting its complex nature. Among the areas covered are current and historical approaches to treatment and prevention of substance abuse as well as the legal and ethical issues surrounding the topics.
