All I can contribute is that I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in undergrad, and Wikipedia indicates the two groups share some similarities. If you'd like to work alongside other members and the membership dues aren't excessive, I'd say go for it.

I guess you would be invited into these societies only if you completed courses offered by Universities & earned letter grades? Not like me, who completed most courses on study.com etc.  Rolleyes

I joined PTK back in 2012.  Since I joined remotely, I couldn't attend any of the chapter functions, nor did I necessarily care to.  However, I joined it more for personal development and goal setting.  Since they have a GPA requirement, being a member caused me to strive to keep my GPA up.  So at times when I wanted to slack off on assignments, I would continue pushing for an A.  I've since joined three other honor societies for the same reasons, and haven't earned less than an A in every class since then.

It's only a one-time fee, so I'd say go for it.

I just found out what the requirements were for Phi Beta Kappa at my undergrad university:

  • Full-time undergraduate student
  • At least 60 credit hours in liberal arts and sciences coursework
  • Significant breadth and depth of coursework across the liberal arts and sciences, including advanced college-level coursework in mathematics and foreign language
  • Good moral character [???]
I'm not really sure about needing letter grades, but the GPA requirement suggests a certain number of them would be necessary. Other websites list a minimum GPA (possibly at least 3.8-3.9 cumulative), with invites going out to between 2%-10% of the graduating class, then those individuals somehow getting voted on by current members. I'm unsure if Phi Theta Kappa is different.

I never knew any of this until just now, and it sounds like real Midnight Society type of stuff. I do know that I was drunk as an under-aged skunk most nights in New Orleans since we had Wednesday Weekends, but I guess all that debauchery was counterbalanced by badly translating "Family Guy" skits into Mayan and Japanese? Hell if I know; I'd still tell people to join if it doesn't cost too much and you'd like to do something with the group. It can help push you to continue excelling, too, if you respond well to external motivation.

I don't have much to say about it, sorry. I didn't attend any of the gatherings, but I have been getting e-mails about transferring to different well-established B&M colleges and universities. That's a plus if you ask me.

In the state of Texas, public universities use the Texas Common Application. There is a version of it for students transferring from a community college. One of the questions is: Are you a member of Phi Theta Kappa?
