SL English Comp - anyone ever ask for a zero?
#11
cookderosa Wrote:I have 2 sons finishing English Comp 2. They are both down to their last writing assignments. One son will finish easily next week, the other takes DAYS to write a paper.
My son who writes slowly does really well on his written assignments and has a solid A so far, and even with the grade of zero on his remaining papers, will have a high B in the class. I'm trying to figure out if he can just be done and not write his last 2 papers. Has anyone ever submitted a paper that was blank or sent SL a message asking for a ZERO on an assignment? He only has a month of school left, and I'd SO much rather he devote it to finishing his other subjects. Thoughts?

SL already states that you must complete all assignments regardless of passing grade in order to receive credit. They will return the assignment back to you and have you complete it if you submit a blank document (I tried because I was on a time crunch for graduation).

If he want's a zero, send in the quickest 10 minute typing job the student can do...
I mean, yeah, finish it, but with utmost speed. Get graded! That is the only option!

I took a 1 zero from Study.com. I did very well on the 2 other essays and easily passed the proctored. I completed all 3 for Comp 2, but I wasn't in much of a hurry. IMO, 1 SL essay wont make much of an impact on the future.

SL wouldn't accept a 0 in a lab. I already asked with my dilemma, lol. I already had a 95%, so I was like, "Screw it." But they gave a hard N O to that idea.

Thank you for answering the question. Wink

I finally said, "turn the dang thing into your teacher as a first draft, and ask her opinion on it. If she says it's good enough to get a decent grade on, that won't affect your overall grade, then just hand it in and get it over with!"

It's not that I'm teaching her to be lazy, it's also that I'm trying to teach her to prioritize. If she can get a "solid B" as her teacher said about the paper right now, and it keeps her A in the class, then she has time to finish up a couple of other things early and spend more time on math (where she's getting a B-). She has to learn that spending more time on something that's not super important is taking away from some things that are more important.

I think that's a better life lesson than "do your best work every second of every day" - for a kid that is a very hard worker already. I certainly am NOT saying that this is a lesson every kid needs to learn, they're all different and need to learn different skills for their personality type and all of that. It's just the lesson that SHE needs at this current time in her life.

I would have your kid do a quick rough draft of the essay, or maybe an outline or something. And then turn that in, and let it go. He's obviously needing the same lesson that my kid needs.

I think we share the same perspective, and I value your opinion. Thanks!

To be more specific, I also talked in live chat and e-mailed someone in the English department and both times I was told they couldn't give me a zero/incomplete on any of the assignments regardless of my passing grade (I even told them I was really close to my graduation deadline and needed it, but they were firm on requiring assignments to be completed). Does this mean, in theory, that one could simply write a rather abysmal paper in an hour with very few sources and submit it to get a low grade? Or do they have quality control of some kind to require re-sumbittal if it isn't at a minimum caliber of work?

Yes to the first question. As long as you meet the minimum word count and follow the proper format (just look at the samples of each assignment), it should get accepted. I didn't meet the minimum word count for one and they had me resubmit it for grading.

Same here. I was pressed for time and money and my Straighterline subscription was expiring. I had aced everything else, in the Business Communications class. This was their response:

- We have a very strict ACE-required rule that we cannot award course credit if any required assignments have a grade of zero. This final exam is required and must meet the minimums in terms of word count and topic in order to receive any credit.
