Principles of Management* (BUS201) Credit Type: Course ACE Course Number: 0051 Organization: StraighterLine Location: Online Length: Self-paced, 14 weeks (48 hours) Dates Offered: 10/1/2012 - 3/31/2018 Objective: To introduce the student to the major functions of management and to explain how companies use management to set and accomplish goals through individuals, groups, and other types of resources. The student will have an opportunity to explore other topics including decision making, employee development, organizational structures, conflict resolution, information security, and globalization. Learning Outcome: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to identify the roles and functions of a manager and be able to apply the six stages of decision-making to a business situation; explain elements of strategic planning and strategic decision making; identify ethical issues in business situations and apply ethical norms to make decisions; explain the opportunities and challenges of globalization; recognize organizational structures and mechanisms for coordination; explain and apply criteria for selection, pay, development, and appraisal of employees; describe the diversity of the American workforce and recommend ways to manage the diverse workforce; identify ways to motivate employees and leadership theories and styles; describe how to build effective teams and resolve conflict; describe effective communication strategies; compare and contrast types and methods of managerial control; explain the importance of information and information security; and evaluate the need for change and recommend change for a business situation. Instruction: The methods of instruction include audio visual materials, practical exercises, computer-based training, multimedia online lesson presentations, practice problems and exercises, review activities, reading assignments, and access up to 10 hours of tutoring. The general course topics include decision-making; strategic planning; ethics and social responsibility; motivational theories; organizational structure; human resource management; change management; team building; managing a diverse workforce; operational control; communication; managing information; and globalization. Assessment: The methods of evaluation are quizzes and examinations with a minimum passing score of 70 percent. Credit Recommendation: In the lower-division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in business (10/12).
