Has anyone tried to defer student loans by enrolling in self paced classes? Is that possible? Idaho State University, BYU etc.

Also how long can one defer students loans while actively enrolled? How many credits must one take?

You have to be enrolled at least half time, and be a degree seeking student at an accredited college or university in order to qualify for an in-school deferment. So taking one of the independent study classes at various universities will not qualify.

How long you can defer your student loans depends on your circumstances. Generally your loan is deferred until you graduate or drop below half time. At that time, you enter a 6 month forbearance. You can request other types of forbearance (heardship forbearance, etc), but these all depend on your circumstances.

All of this information should have been covered in your entrance counseling when you first applied for your student loan.

Not to mention the fact that many of the courses say that they cannot be used for financial aid purposes. I assume that also means they cannot be used to defer loans.
