SL is very understanding on these type of requests. They will most likely, offer to leave a value ($$) credit on your account or apply for a refund.
I changed courses after purchase and had bonus courses on my account once I finished my BSBA and there was no issue with either example.

I've done refunds before, basically they don't refund you anything, they place credit onto your account.
I've purchased other courses that I wanted, in essence, I took over 30 courses from them... My recommendation is, find the courses you need and make sure not to max over 90 credits. I just took a few more courses as I wanted to ... for personal learning experience in those courses.

Perhaps it was bad luck on the CS agent bjcheung77, but to the OP, SL will definitely credit it back to your card, just make the request and let them know you have no need for the course in your degree plan.

How long does the money take to go back on the card?

There was no delay on either side of the options. Applying credit to the account (StraighterLine) was instant and could be seen while still on the phone with CS. Applying $$$ on the credit card was within 24 hours if I remember correctly. If longer, it was not much more than that.
