I know that my reply is coming somewhat late since you asked this question several weeks ago, but I am currently enrolled in Straighterline's biology course (without the lab, since I don't need it). I feel that it is time-consuming, but certainly manageable if you invest the appropriate amount of time into the course.

You will definitely need the book if you want to do well in SL's biology course. There's no doubt about it. I have noticed that many of the test questions come directly from the chapters or from the glossary in the back of the book. In fact, the course is based on the book. I purchased a used copy of the textbook from Ebay. In addition, even though the exams are open-book and non-proctored, I still find them to be very rigorous.

I think the discount is actually 40, my bill was 99. Also, if you start the chain, we can get a list going where each person who enrolls gets a $15 iTunes card per the current "refer a friend" promotion. If you want to do that, you can be referred by my son (he started yesterday) and we can make a new thread so you'd be the next one to get the card, etc...

You will definitely need the textbook that Straighterline recommends for this course (Inquiry Into Life, by Sylvia Mader). The exam questions come from the book, and you will need the glossary at the back of the book for many of your answers. Click on the link below to get to the website that corresponds with the Mader biology textbook, because it has cool practice quizzes that correspond to the topics in the actual course. I would recommend taking these practice quizzes on each topic before taking the actual exams. Although the Straighterline biology exams are all open-book and non-proctored, they are still somewhat tricky, so prepare before taking them.

Here's an update that I also posted in another thread. . .

I completed Straighterline's Biology course within the past hour with an overall grade of 80.6 percent. I wasn't really concerned about my overall percentage in this course since I plan to convert it into ACE credit, and from what I've been told, this shows up as 'CR' on their transcript without issuance of a letter grade. All I needed was the minimum 70% that qualifies for ACE college credit. At this point, I'm simply looking to accrue cheap college credits, and Biology was personally too broad of a subject for me to CLEP out of, so Straighterline fulfilled my needs with this course.

Although the exams were open-book, they were not necessarily easy. I did feel as if I had to step up to the challenge if I wanted to pass this course with the minimum 70% that is required for an ACE transcript. My study tools included the blackboard presentations on SL in addition to the textbook that was recommended. I obtained a used textbook very cheaply on Ebay.

My advice to anyone who plans to take this course is to definitely obtain the book that SL recommends. Many, if not most, of the exam questions can be answered by flipping through the book's glossary or looking up a diagram or figure in the corresponding chapters. Since the course is entirely based on the textbook, it would greatly benefit you if you would obtain this book.

It took me a month to get through this course due to the nature of my work. I work 12-hour night shifts at a healthcare facility as a floor nurse, five days per week, so I am working an average of 60 hours weekly although I do intend to reduce my working hours in the very near future. I am also enrolled in SL's business communication course and have completed about 1/3 of it with plans to complete it within the next 10 to 14 days.

Thanks for the congrats! This was my very first online course ever (all of my previous credits earned have been at brick-and-mortar colleges while taking up butt space in a classroom). The completion of this class tells me that I can successfully tackle independent learning and be somewhat successful at it. My next order of business is to finish off Straighterline's business communication course that I started, and I anticipate that I can complete it within the next 10 days or so. I'll return to post an update of how I performed in that course.

After completing a few Straighterline courses, I plan to take the microbiology ECE. If I pass this ECE, I might even venture into the world of CLEPs and DSSTs because the immediate gratification of quickly earning college credits through testing-out appeals to me.
• Master of Science in Nursing - Eastern New Mexico University (in progress)
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing - Western Governors University (3/2015)
• Associate of Science in Nursing - Platt College (3/2010)
• Diploma of Vocational Nursing - Casa Loma College (10/2005)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
• Professional licensure: LPN/LVN (1/2006); RN (5/2010)
• 16 brick & mortar credits from Oxnard College (2000 to 2001)
• 38 brick & mortar credits from Tarrant County College (2006 to 2008)

I think I have "met" you another forum in the past, nursing forum maybe? Anyway, I have to take the Microbiology ECE soon as well. It, along with Intro to Speech, is my last pre-req for ISU's LPN-BSN program. I also just passed my first clep today, Psychology. I am reading the Microbiology Demystified book and it seems to be better than the College Network binder I have. Its very, very easy read. Thought I would share.
