Straighterline English Composition II Review
#21
FYI, in case anyone is finding this in a search, it looks like maybe they've redone this course. This doesn't appear to match the assignments I have.

Rachel, would you share the current assignments for this course? I was considering it for my younger son but I knew the Frankenstein papers would get old...

There are still two Frankenstein papers (my least favorite of the lot; I hate that book).

(chapter 2) Comic strip or cartoon analysis 40 pts/500 wds
(chapter 4) Frankenstein Critical Analysis Evaluation Essay 75 pts/750 wds
(chapter 5) Frankenstein Practical Application Essay 75 pts/750 wds
(chapter 6) Interview & Summary 10 pts/350 wds (+ you have to do the actual interview)
(chapter 7) Research Proposal Letter 50 pts/500 wds
(chapter 8) Media Analysis 50 pts/500 wds
(chapter 9) Illustration Essay 100 pts/500 wds
(chapter 10) Classification Essay 100 pts/500 wds

The cartoon analysis requires doing essentially a literary analysis of a cartoon (noting the figurative language, etc. used).
The critical analysis essay asks you to evaluate an analysis of Frankenstein (you have around 10 to choose from).
The application essay asks you to write about how the book addresses a social/ethical issue (there are a handful of topics to choose from).
The interview requires that you interview an expert of 10+ years in a given field, and summarize the interview. This is to be about a particular issue where you see a need for change, because it's used for the next assignment.
The research proposal letter uses the previous interview as a source and calls on a public official or someone of that nature to investigate making a change.
The media analysis is an essay addressing how one element of a media production (lighting, camera use, symbolism, etc.) is used.
The illustration essay offers about a dozen topics to choose from, and you have to use illustrations to cover it. (These are...kind of lame.)
The classification essay provides ten topics, and you choose one about which to differentiate and describe the various "types."

I don't know. It might depend on what topics best resonate with a given writer. I consider myself a pretty good, pretty fast writer (I've been known to turn in basically a first draft and get a 100%, in a regular class), and I'm finding this course to be more mentally exhausting and take longer than I expected. It's not so much that the writing assignments are "difficult" as that I find most of the topics awkward, personally.

The study.com English Comp II seems easier.
Georgia Institute of Technology: MS in Analytics (3/32 Credits)
Boston University: MS in Software Development
Thomas Edison State University: BA in Liberal Studies

It might be. My school is kind of weird about what they'll accept for English general ed credits, so I wanted to play it safe and go with one that's listed as equivalent.

I know this thread is old, but what topic did you use for the interview and proposal letter? I'm done with the class except this! I have been stuck on it for over a week! I can't think of anything that I want to change and have no idea who I could ask or even google to find an interview online. Please help with ideas if you have any. Thank you so much!

I interviewed a pastor, and my topic was how well prepared pastors are to handle mental health issues.   (That is, how knowledgeable are they, consequent to their seminary studies?)

I did SL Comp 2 a year ago.

AFAIK, there is no need to really performed a "real" interview". For the interview assignment, I related a farewell event of an ex-colleague who talks about his past achievement, fond memories and challenges working as a Head of a Department.

What I basically did was rewrote his speech that day into an interview report.

Also, the proposal letter need not have a strong linkage with the interview assignment. I write in the capacity of the same ex-colleague making a proposal on some la-di-da mentioned in his speech.
