Straighterline - Taking My First Course - Advice?
#11
(08-07-2017, 04:09 PM)Silly_Me Wrote: Do you guys happen to know the bare minimum I can get on the exams & still be able to "click through" the final?  I got an 80% on my first exam.  I really hope I can do better on the next one!

Here is the breakdown for the course -

Graded Exam 1 - 100
Graded Exam 2 - 100
Graded Exam 3 - 100
Midterm Exam -  200
Graded Exam 4 - 100
Graded Exam 5 - 100
Graded Exam 6 - 100
Final Graded Exam - 200

Total - 1000

To need 0 points on the final, aim for an 87.5% on all non-final exams.

To need less than 20% of the points on the final, you would need an 82.5% average.

Alternative Credit Project has DIFFERENT partners than Straighterline. So, if something ever were to happen that you wanted to attend a different school than your target school, you would have it in place.

For example - there is only 1 ACP school in my state: Fayetteville State University. They are a NC Public college, they have guaranteed transfer / articulation agreements with all of our community colleges, and they offer degrees on line. They will NOT accept credit from Straighterline directly, or ACE directly - but they have a written agreement to accept all SL credit that appears on the ACP transcript.

Adding your SL credit to the ACP section of your transcript takes not time or cost- it's low hanging fruit and falls into the "just in case" category.

EDIT: pretty much every SL course is on the ACP list too, except for some of the career ones. For instance, my son took Medical Terms, and that one doesn't count on ACP.

It's so annoying, especially in timed exams. I just downloaded an update for the VitalSource Bookshelf Reader, so I really hope that speeds it up.

So do I have to buy the free ebook from Straighterline again through Vital Souce - confused?

1.  On day 1 of your class, schedule your final exam for 3 days from now.
2.  Take exam 1 and look up every answer, don't guess.
3.  If you do poorly, you can retake exam 1, but if you do better than 90%, keep moving forward.
4.  Take exam 2 and look up every answer, don't guess.
-insert to add:  you can watch the slides much faster than reading the text, which won't coordinate well.  But, the answers to the questions are likely pulled from your text.  As far as getting comfortable with the material, I suggest just watching the slides and not reading the text - use the text for tests and just learn/look up as you go.
5.  Keep watching slides/ taking exams.  You can easily do 1/day, but more if you have time.
6.  Take your final no matter where you are in the class.
-insert to add:  I know this feels crazy, but if the exam questions are fresh in your mind (because you just did them) you'll have an easier time either remembering or guessing your way through compared to waiting, studying and taking your final much later. You can do entire SL courses inside a week (assuming the 4-5 exam format)
7.  Finish remaining exams (if applicable) and add your course to your ACE transcript.  -insert to add:  since Straighterline is also an Alternative Credit Project partner, add Microbiology TWICE.  First as a SL course, and second as an ACP course.  You'll get approval for both but it will only count once later.

Hello, so I'm curious about the finals, I know they are closed book . But are they questions that we have seen before? I am going to do some crash courses and take mine hopefully this Wednesday. Thanks Smile

I hadn't realized it was different to add ACPE courses, there are a few of mine that didn't have anything that I saw:

Introduction to Programming in C++
Introduction to Criminal Justice
Information Technology Fundamentals

Thanks for the info! I just added the rest, we shall see if StraighterLine approves them on the first go.

Can someone guide me through on scheduling the proctor Final exam? It say's "Click here to start your proctoring." But everytime I click it, it opens up another tab of My Dashboard. Confuse. This will be my first online proctored exam so I don't know what to expect. Taking the SL - Sociology.
