In my experience, a lot of the people working in college offices are work study students, and they just a) don't stick around enough and b) sometimes just don't care, so misinformation is rampant. Sometimes it's so basic it's hard to see how they could get it wrong. I had the financial aid office of a brick-and-mortar school where I was *standing in the office* tell me three different times (at least two different people) that they did not have a financial aid form to fill out for the school itself. They did. How you can even have a job in financial aid and not know something so fundamental is beyond me.

So, yeah...always trust your own judgment if the replies you're getting don't sound right.
