TESC Diploma
#11
A COSC diploma will simply say Bachelor of Arts or Science. Does it matter? It's not like any employers will ever see the piece of paper. They'll just see it on your resume and then perhaps verify it through a background check.

LOL.. the only time I've ever seen a diploma hanging on the wall that mattered was at a medical office. I think my veterinarian has her diploma hanging on the wall. Not sure that seeing one of our diplomas would make any difference.

I understand that a COSC one will say that, but I'm curious about TESC and yes, I hate to say that it *may* actually matter, because I live in a pretty superficial, competitive, aggressive metro city where looks mean a lot unfortunately. I don't think it would be an end all for me either, as I would go on to receive a Bachelors. Smile

To be honest, I didn't even know how employers verify college degrees. I thought you DID have to bring in the physical diploma and such. Has that been a common experience?....that they just run an overall background check. I work somewhere that just runs a basic background check on all employees, now that I think of it, but I wasn't sure if that practice was unique to just us or not. Wink

I just thought that since the History Bachelors states: Bachelors of Arts, that all TESC diplomas would either state Bachelors of Arts or Bachelors of Science with no actual major. Are there any more people willing to post a pic of their TESC diplomas on here with just the private info blacked out? We'd be forever grateful Smile:p
OK. Here is a snapshot of a TESC diploma and the tail end of a TESC transcript, or at least the unofficial student copy that came with my diploma.

From what I've seen in the business world (and I've held management positions with Fortune 500 companies), I've never seen anyone with their college diploma hanging on the wall.

Regarding background checks, it goes something like this. You go into an interview and put whatever you want on your resume. The person interviewing you assumes that everything you say is true. If they like you and want to hire you, they'll give you an offer that is contingent upon a successful background check. Most large employers don't do their own background checks; they'll contract out to companies that do them professionally. I had a heck of a time for a while because I've got work experience out of the country and it was challenging to verify. But yes, they call your former employers and your schools to make sure that you were there. They can't legally ask very much, so if you say "I was the top performer at XYZ company," they can't verify that... but they can verify that you actually worked at XYZ company. And NO I have never heard of a single case where people were asked to physically show their diploma. Trust me. I've interviewed hundreds of people and not a single one walked through the door, diploma in hand. They just list it on the resume.

I think you may be worrying much about something that doesn't matter. If where you want to work is really so competitive that the wording on the diploma matters, the Big 3 may not be right for you. You might need to go to a school with a better name. There's nothing wrong with the accreditation of any of the big 3, but no they're not prestigious. IMHO, they're better than a school like UoP or Capella or one of the other well known online schools because the Big 3 don't have a stigma attached to them, but they're unknown. Most people have never heard of them.

What you might also want to consider if you're in a highly competitive environment in addition to the question "is one of the Big 3 right for you, " is whether it would be better to hurry through your undergrad and get right into a masters program. It's been discussed in other posts, but often times once you've got your graduate degree, no one cares about your undergrad. In that case, it might make sense to test through your degree quickly and then devote your time and energy to the best possible masters you can get.

Lol.. hopefully this helps somewhat and just doesn't make things more confusing Wink

You guys are so helpful! Lots of EXCELLENT points and information. I'm actually looking for executive administrative assistant positions in the long run. While none of what an executive assistant does really even requires college, employers have just gotten pickier these days and they have every right. Many of the $45,000+/year jobs that I am interested in require applicants to have a Bachelors degree. After reading through many threads, I am starting to see that employers weigh heavily on how well you do in an interview (presentation, professionalism, etc.) and what your experience is like. I am somewhat of a "youngin'" in the workforce, so I am just trying to build a solid resume and give myself a little more credibility. I realize that my resume is a faceless piece of paper and I'm trying to clean it up as much as possible. A Bachelors degree will definitely allow me to apply to more positions and MAYBE have a better chance of getting my foot in the door to at least interview. Right now I am happy where I work, but there's a lot of room for growth and it's a potentially temp-perm sort of assignment, so I just want to make sure that I'm making the most of the next few years of my life and bettering myself, etc.

Yes, you're right. I ultimately just want my Masters degree. I'll be happy with my Bachelors, but I want to transfer somewhere for my Masters...perhaps a SUNY school Smile. You're also right about 3rd party verification companies. I just wasn't 100% sure what went on behind the scenes with those. That's why I was asking questions and to be honest with you, I have had the whole "If you get a degree in Arts or Science, employers will think you couldn't make up your mind and major in a some special and won't take you as seriously". *sigh* It's unfortunate because I could have been finished with college by now, but like many, I am a working adult and college is pricey. When I took my national nursing entrance exams, I scored in the 93rd percentile, 99th, and 96th percentile for each different exam. I know PERSONALLY that I am an intelligent individual and have no problem passing my college classes, but employers these days require a Bachelors degree to speak that for ya.

I'm glad I found this forum and glad that you guys continue to answer my questions. I was just curious about the whole TESC vs COSC thing because TESC lists their Bachelors as being MAJORS vs. COSC listing as a concentration, yet BOTH away the general diplomas that don't state anything about the major or concentration. It was sort of confusing.

What do you guys plan on majoring in for your Masters? I wonder if, one day, when I have my Masters if I would just put THAT, standing alone, on my resume. Have a nice night you guys! I'm feeling slightly sick. Will reply to you "B" tomorrow :o

Yes, it's a sad truth about how competitive any job has gotten. I have seen executive assistants that do more work than the executive, so that's probably why you'd be highly scrutinized.

I'm not sure that I can help the TESC vs. COSC question too much more, as it depends on your interests and priorities. They both really have their pros and cons. For me personally since I couldn't get through pre-calc, I would have chosen a Liberal Arts degree if I had enrolled at TESC. However, I was able to get through the math part of my program at COSC. So, for me, I think that a business admin concentration from COSC suits my goals more than a liberal arts degree from TESC. However, I do think that the BSBA from TESC is probably better than my Concentration in Business Admin from COSC. (That was a little rambling and not sure it makes sense sorry)

Yikes... tough decision. If you're getting your masters, either is fine. Just look at the costs, the degree plans and go with your gut feeling.

I hope to get into a bilingual MBA from Regis University. I haven't applied yet, but will do so in May.

If you're just starting off in your career, you may want to check out my post on career tips here: http://www.degreeforum.net/off-topic/130...ccess.html Lol of course I wrote it, so I think it's good, but there may be a tip or two that can help you. I hope so at least!!

Does anyone know whether or not TESC's diploma has the major listed? What about EC and COSC? I guess I'm just curious haha

Here's my thread, I posted a picture of the diploma and the transcript is further down.

Nobody in the workforce or academia looks at your actual degree or cares to see it, except you. Even the government wants to see your actual college transcripts to verify your education when you apply for a federal job, but they do not give a rat's ass about that fancy piece of framed paper with the Old English lettering. The degree is for your personal enjoyment.

The major exceptions to this are the professions that work on your body or your animal's body (physicians, physical therapists, speech language pathologists, dentists, chiropractors, pharmacists, occupational therapists, veterinarians, etc.) and attorneys who work in private practice. While these people probably did not need to bring their diploma to the interview or human resources office, they usually do display their diplomas in their offices and workplaces conspicuously to prove that they have the educational attainment to do what they claim to do.

My former economics teacher has had his degree since the early 1970s, and he states that no one has ever asked to look at his degree. The people who do the hiring simply verify his educational attainment through background checks.

If you click on the picture, you can get a larger view.

You can make your own at Hobby Lobby for about $30 or less. They look way better than the one you're willing to spend $90 on. I think even Target and Wal-Mart have better looking frames for way less.
