TESC Midterm
#1
I'm three weeks away from taking my midterm at TESC for War and American Society. Up until just now I've been thinking along the lines of midterm - test - tests are easy - I've taken lots of tests - it will be easy and I'll get a nice grade. But I just kinda realized that this isn't just another CLEP/DSST test. I have no idea what to expect on it. I haven't thought about studying for it. It's not like there's an REA or IC for it. Wink Basically I'd like to know:

What are the questions like? Multiple choice? Fill in the blank? Essay?

What will I be tested on? Am I gonna have to make more of an effort to prepare for this other than the assigned reading I've had?

How many questions, approx?

Will there be essays to write also?

Anybody have any experience with this that they'd like to share? Smile

You'll want to check with your mentor to confirm but it should match the syllabus which states:

"You are required to take a closed-book, proctored midterm examination (see the course Calendar and the Syllabus).

The exam is two hours long and covers material in Modules 1 through 3, through the Civil War. It consists of true/false, identification, and essay questions. If you have questions about the format and/or content of the examination, please contact your mentor at least a week in advance of the scheduled test. The exam is two hours long."

I studied for my midterm as if it were a CLEP and failed miserably.

It is not enough to know the definition of the terms at the end of the chapter. Make sure you fully understand and can explain in essay format the concepts of the material in the 1st half of the course.

If you would normally study 1 week for a CLEP, study 2 weeks for a midterm. That's what I wish I had done.

I took the midterm for War and American Society back in June. As I recall, it was around 30-40 questions. It was just like it said in the description: a mix of true/false, multiple choice, and essay questions. The essay questions give you a minimum word requirement, and will have you answer and summarize the question. One of the ones I got had to do with what factors in the Civil War doomed the South to defeat?

This course was a very easy A. I loved writing the assignments, and I loved discussing with the fellow students. I learned much about how and why America repeats the same mistakes it made in prior wars, largely from the discussions. I got away with just reading the main textbook "From Lexington To Baghdad and Beyond." I did read one or two of the other required works, but did just fine without having to read all of them.

I am taking the final tomorrow. I found the midterm very easy, but then again I was already pretty familiar with American history. The questions were maybe 1/2 true false, half fill in the blank. They were nothing too tricky - like true false, did everyone in the colonies support the revolution? What was the fort fired on to start the Civil War? What was the siege that delayed Santa Anna in Texas Revolution?

The essay questions were broad topics, but you only had to write a short paragraph as it turned out. I had plenty of time, but the whole test took maybe 40 minutes and I got an A.

The one thing that worried me was that all but the essay questions are scored automatically and they show you the score. So even if you do well, you have a less than 60 until they grade the essays in a few days.

I also took the War and American Society midterm in June. If you have been participating in the discussions and reading the required textbooks, you should be ok. I just went back and looked at the lines I had highlighted as review.

I took the midterm in October and I have just one hint for anyone who will be taking this test - STUDY!!!! Like others said, the test is not like a CLEP where you just have to pick the right answer out of choices given to you. You actually have to know everything that's required, be able to recite the facts, and comment on the overall picture (factors, strategies of both sides in the wars, effect of societal values and beliefs, etc). My test (for the OL HIS-356) was composed of True/False questions (very tricky, detailed questions), fill-in-the-blank (very easy if you've paid attention to the assignments and discussion), and 3 essays (broad topics, but requiring a broad knowledge of the subjects).

I haven't received my grade yet, and I tend to think I didn't do very well (and that my professor is sparing me the bad news until after the final exam)... and I have ALWAYS been a straight-A student and never failed a CLEP or DSST. So take warning. Everyone's test is different, but you will definitely need to study "From Lexington to Baghdad" very carefully and memorize events, key players and leaders, strategies, societal trends, military preparedness of each side during each war, results of each war, effect that "great men" had on the morale and societal attitude towards the wars.

I'll update when I've gotten my grade back... and please don't freak out over my tips. The test is passable, I just don't think I studied correctly. Smile

Best wishes to all of you studying,
HB

As promised, here's my midterm grade which was just posted: 99%. Wahoooooo! (At first it was posted as 77% (!) because they grade the essays separately from the other questions and post the grade for the first part, then update it when they've got the whole thing graded. So I sorta freaked out at first, thinking I'd gotten a grade the equivalent of a C. *Note: do not freak out until you are sure the whole grade has been posted!

My tips to getting a good score are:
1. Study the main textbook "From Lexington to Baghdad" and take detailed notes.
2. Then read the other assigned books.
3. Then do wikipedia study, asking yourself questions about the material and finding the answers.
4. Then look up every term on the study guide your professor provides and know every detail about them.
5. Then recite the name of each war, the dates, the Presidents, the political objectives, the military objectives, the actual military strategy (naval, ground troops, air support, etc.), the main battles, the turning points, the weaknesses of each side, and the reason the winning side won - until you've got it all memorized and can recite it perfectly.

If you've got that down, start looking at the societal atmosphere preceding and during each war. Study the effect of media, public opinion (support, riots, etc.), the names of specific authors and newspapers that influenced the public, and the reactions of the public to the results of the war. If you get all that, you should be able to pass the test just fine.

Hope that helps,
HB
