TESC Order of Math ALEKS/CLEPS
#11
ALEKS is only worth credit if your college allows courses that have been ACE evaluated. While it's not an exam, it is a pass-fail course, and that can sometimes also fall under certain restrictions.

Frequently here we have so many people using colleges that openly accept all ACE evaluated courses, that it's assumed -generically- that all colleges accept ALEKS for credit. That is not the case, in fact, as a rule I would NOT assume your college accepts ACE courses; if they do, party time! ALEKS is still a curriculum, and as such, you can use it as the mode of study for an exam as well. So, let's say your school does not accept ACE evaluated credit. What can you do with your ALEKS course? Use the material you just completed as preparation for the corresponding CLEP exam. There are exams in college math, algebra, precal, calc and then stats which are likely acceptable by your school.

For kids, especially high school kids, ALEKS is fantastic. It gives you a curriculum to use for the school year and then prepares for the CLEP. You can take the CLEP at the completion of each ALEKS course. You're essentially doubling up on the possibility that they'll have college credit stored when the time comes. *even CLEP is not credit, it's potential credit.

The difference between high school and adults - high school students are learning the material for high school. The're using the credit as their own home-made version of dual enrollment. It's a fantastic opportunity. Yes, you might not get credit later, but so what? You don't get credit for learning in high school anyway- in this case IF YOU DO, you're ahead.

Plan: ALEKS for math, take CLEPs as they match what you study, enroll upon graduation and send all three sets of transcripts (high school, college board, ACE) and see what credits are awarded. You can also be the one to change college policy, so just because you're denied (if you are) look at that as a chance to skool the school Smile If you're headed to a community college, you'll likely get credit in some amount. (or at the very least skip the placement exam- which I would fight hard for)

My school, Maple Woods CC, does accept ACE credit. They are on the national list. I contacted them about the course and they said it would transfer in as equivalent to their College Algebra

Thanks for the clarification on it being transfer credit. It is more of a course, a very cheap course,($60 isn't bad for a class, if you do Aleks in a month and you pay the one-time registration fee to ACE). I hope someday ACE will certify other Aleks science courses, maybe they will make legitimate labs that demonstrate lab skills through online work. This would revolutionize learning in the sciences, I know a lot of books make science labs for the computer, I've done a few in botany class and I have to say for the most part they suck and I didn't learn much. Maybe someday somebody will create quality labs online and ACE will be able to certify these. It'd be nice to do preparatory chemistry online, my school doesn't allow us to jump right into General College Chemistry(Even if you have college algebra)

Straighterline is ACE approved, and quite a few schools accept it. You can get lab components from their courses, they have most introductory science courses.

Ok, just to be clear, it's not $60. It's $20 per month, and the payment to ACE (used to be only $20 but I've not checked lately) is for your WHOLE transcript. So, you can take as many ACE classes as you want, you still only pay ONE transcript fee Smile

Lastly, let's not overlook that your CC accepts ACE. THAT'S HUGE!! There are not many CCs here that are tried and true at awarding ACE credit (a few, not many) so THIS is actually HUGE news. THANKS for sharing!!

As OE mentioned, there are other ACE evaluated options now that you know you can use ACE credit, you should certainly look at Straighterline!

The ACE one-time registration fee is now $40. I still say that's a good deal, they work really fast to get Aleks courses on your transcript.

Well, school did email me and already said they accept it but it's not official yet. They haven't added it to my transcript, so really I'll believe it when I see it. I talked with an adviser today and apparently they haven't received my transcript yet. ACE sent it on 7/20, I'm beginning to wonder if I should have it emailed to my school, as I need the credit awarded before I can sign up for trigonometry there.

Does anyone know if you can do all of the ALEKS stats classes for the TESC Business degree? I want to take the most classes I can from ALEKS (trying to do them all in a month or 2) and I'm working on my Degree plan.
