TESU BSBA in Computer Information Systems (CIS) - UL Options?
#1
I am looking for affordable options to meet the UL requirements for the TESU BSBA in Computer Information Systems (CIS).

Right now the only 3 credit one I know of is the Managing Information Systems ACPE-0118 from ed4online.com. With their recent price drop it comes in at $195 for 3 UL credits in the CIS AOS. I also have the free 2 UL for the TEEX Cybersecurity for IT Professionals. Ideally I would consider UL affordable as under $100 per credit, but the lower cost the better of course.

Additionally, I have 3 UL in Project Management from Sophia. Does anyone know if this can apply to the UL requirements for this program?

TECEP Networking, DSST MIS, DSST Cybersecurity (may duplicate TEEX but is 3 cr), and possibly CSU-Global.

You have 2 required courses as well:
Programming Language: C++ from SL will work here, as will any other course you have
Systems Analysis & Design: CSU-Global CBE is the only testing option, $250, comes in as CIS-320 (UL)

MIS from ed4online can be replaced by the DSST if you'd like (both are CIS-301)
Networking TECEP, $114, comes in as CMP-354
Fund. of Cybersecurity DSST comes in as CIS-344, it will replace the free TEEX course
CSU-Global has a few additional UL courses, Cloud Computing & Big Data comes in as CIS-499, not sure what Ethical Hacking & Penetration Testing will come in as, not sure what Intermediate Networking will come in as.

Project Management will not normally fit in that area (it's not on the list), but it certainly can't hurt to try to get it approved: I asked and they stuck it in the HR AOS for me, and it's definitely not HR-related that I can see. It IS IT-related, so it's worth a shot.

The business school was too lazy to evaluate the new CSU Global CBEs when I asked. Only Information Systems Analysis and Design and Cloud Computing are approved. They just told me the others weren't in their system and left it at that. If you don't want to take the Cybersecurity DSST, then you can save money by taking TEEX for IT Professionals and for Business Professionals. Currently, IT is CAP-385 and Business is CIS-344. Since they are two credits each, both of them will have to be used together because TESU is currently not waiving the last UL credit. If you live near a DSST testing center, I highly recommend the MIS DSST over the Ed4Credit course because it's cheaper and an easy test.

In addition to the SL course for programming, CSU Global has a CBE for Basic Programming (Java) and Penn Foster has an Intro to Programming course that is ACE-approved until February 2017. Penn Foster is the easiest, but most expensive option. SL will be the hardest due to the multiple programming assignments and recommendation that you know pre-calculus.

TEEX cybersecurity for business was downgraded to CIS-244 a while back. It's not CIS-344 anymore. The DSST comes in as CIS-344.

I agree the MIS test is easy especially for folks who work in IT, but it underwent a revision a few months ago.

It was IT Professionals that was originally CIS-344. That is how it was evaluated when I transferred it in. Business Professionals was originally some other code. I'm not even going to bother with remembering the equivalencies after that. My post here is based on the most recent information. This is what I received in an email on 09/26/16.

Quote:We award credit based on ACE recommendations.
Cybersecurity for Everyone typically transfers over as CAP-295, Introduction to Security Basics
Cybersecurity for IT Professionals transfers over as CAP-385, Network Security
Cybersecurity for Business Professionals transfers over as CIS-344, Computer Security

I had IT Professionals changed from the old evaluation of CIS-344 to the new evaluation of CAP-385 so that I can take Cybersecurity for Business Professionals and transfer it in as CIS-344 without duplicating IT Professionals. It's pre-approved in my plan. Another member here has also been recently told that Business Professionals transfers as CIS-344 and duplicates the DSST in Cybersecurity.

For whatever crazy reason, TESU has changed Cybersecurity for Business Professionals from CIS-344 down to CIS-244 then back to CIS-344. It would make more sense as CIS-244 since ACE has not evaluated it as UL, which would help it not overlap with the DSST exam, which ACE recommended as UL.

I just keep going back to TESU not knowing what in the world is going on over there on a regular basis.

sanantone - Just to confirm the MIS DSST will come in as UL? - you have it listed as LL on the updated post July 2015 wiki page. The ed4online Managing Information Systems ACPE-0118 is on TESU's Alternative Credit Project (ACP) listing as coming in as UL (CIS-301). I would rather spend the extra $100 in this case if it counts as UL vs LL

Also do you think that passing Microsoft's Programming in HTML5 with JavaScript and CSS3 (70-480) exam would both cover the programing and give me UL credit (it is ACE reviewed as 3 UL) needed for the TESU CIS degree (it is ACE reviewed as UL) and cost wise falls $165 for the exam.

TESU has never cared about how ACE evaluates a course. This course code actually works out better for those who want to save money. You can either spend over $100 on the DSST or take IT and Business Professionals for free to fill an upper level requirement. This is what I'm doing to save money. The first course code for Business Professionals was actually MAN-299 or MAN-399, so it couldn't be used toward the CIS degree at all with the exception of business and free electives.

MIS is UL. JSD went in and changed most of my degree plans; I wasn't the one who listed MIS as LL. There is no telling how TESU will evaluate the Microsoft cert. As stated before, TESU does not pay attention to whether or not ACE has recommended UL or LL credits. I do not know if they will count it as programming. If it covers basic programming concepts, then they might count it. I took web development courses that taught HTML, CSS, and Javascript, but TESU said they wouldn't fulfill the programming requirement because they didn't cover things such as loops, arrays, etc.

Not sure how they would fit into the AOS, but APU/AMUhas UL IT classes lasting 8 weeks however at a cost of 750 they run on the expensive side. They have a System Analysis class and I'm waiting to hear from TESU if it fits the requirement for the CIS degree. While these might not be the best option, they might be an option for UL for those like me who aren't good test takers.
