TESU - Course Transfer Questions
#1
Lightbulb
Hi there,

When looking at the Bachelor of Arts degree on TESU's website, I see this:

A. Intellectual and Practical Skills (15 Credits)
ENC-1010
Writing for Success
3
ENC-1020
Writing for Success II
3
COM-2090
Public Speaking
3
MAT-1210
College Algebra
3
SOS-1100
Fact, Fiction, or Fake? Information Literacy Today
3

For all TESU course options that will satisfy this area of the degree, go to Intellectual and Practical Skills.

Does that mean that if I get credits from Sophia/Saylor/etc that transfer to the Intellectual and Practial Skills area, I won't need to take the specific list of courses above?

For instance, if I took a course that transferred as DSI-2000 Visual Storytelling with Data, I wouldn't need to take College Algebra?

Thanks,
Mike

That's correct, you can take any classes from the list they have on the web page for general education: https://www.tesu.edu/academics/courses/j...-and-after
I highly recommend taking what is already on the WIKI for recommended classes, as it uses the cheap, easy, fast options. There really isn't a need to deviate from the WIKI plan unless you have to...

Am I right that this is a required course at TESU? That is, there's nothing to transfer in to take its place?

If not, it looks like its a 12 week course, is that right? How often do you attend a class and for how long?

Thanks,
Mike

Yes, SOS-1110 Information Literacy is a required course for all TESU students. It's TESU's version of an "intro to college" course, where you'll get acquainted with college-level coursework, research, and thinking. It generally cannot be transferred in or waived, with some exceptions.
As an asynchronous online college, you don't really "attend" TESU courses. There aren't scheduled lectures or meeting times. I would recommend logging into the course every day or so to check for announcements, grades, discussion replies, and upcoming due dates.

Thanks again @bjcheung77. What about when you see this:

C. Knowledge of Human Cultures (15 Credits)

SOC-2100 Marriage and the Family 3
HIS-1130 American History I 3
FIL-1100 Exploring American Cinema 3

Select two featured courses from the list below:
SOC-2910 Criminology 3
HIS-1140 American History II 3
HIS-1210 Introduction to World History I 3
HUM-1030 Introduction to the Humanities III: Music 3
PHI-1300 Introduction to Critical Reasoning 3
For additional TESU course options that will satisfy this area of the degree, go to Knowledge of Human Cultures.

--
Do you really have to take two courses from the list above, or can anything that transfers to "Knowledge of Human Cultures" substitute? I was hoping to take these two instead from Sophia:
https://app.sophia.org/online-courses/ap...eligions-2
https://app.sophia.org/online-courses/in...psychology

Thanks so much for your help,
Mike

Hi there,

When looking at Sophia's website of what transfers to TESU, Calculus I isn't included:

https://app.sophia.org/online-courses/calculus-i

Yet, it looks like at one time it did. Does anyone know if this still transfers and satisfies https://www2.tesu.edu/course.php?CourseCode=MAT-231&sem=

Thanks!

Here's a thread that was merged by one of our moderators LevelUP: The member created 13 threads to ask for 'tips' to each one. Essentially, you want to create a thread for your TESU transfers if you have a question, you don't really need 1 thread for 1 course. You can probably split it by providers, such as 1 thread for Sophia.org and 1 thread for Study.com, etc, but right now, you're just trying to get a degree plan in place and you should keep it in one for reference.

Please create a spreadsheet for reference and tracking purposes of the requirements and your progress, copy/paste the requirements from TESU's website and compare what is for the General Education and Specific Degree requirements, once done, make the file viewable (not editable) on your google or one drive. We can then see if there are any recommendations for changes. TESU Categories & Links: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Category:TESU

And of course, I forgot to link to that thread! https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...ourse-TIPS

Which 'Bachelor of Arts' degree are you working towards, your inquiry here is to broad to answer (for example) if you need College Algebra; although most TESU BA degrees do require those credits. I will add that all the courses you listed above (excluding SOS-1100) can be completed through alternative methods, such as Sophia.

I apologize. I thought it would be easier for others to search if the thread was about a single thing. I'll try to conclude this thread and reference it from my degree planning thread, and then just consolidate everything there.

Lets say that I'm looking at https://www.tesu.edu/heavin/asnsm/mathematics

A. Intellectual and Practical Skills (12 Credits)
ENC-1010 Writing for Success 3
ENC-1020 Writing for Success II 3
MAT-1050 Applied Liberal Arts Mathematics 3
SOS-1100 Fact, Fiction, or Fake? Information Literacy Today 3
For all TESU course options that will satisfy this area of the degree, go to Intellectual and Practical Skills.

To satisfy this requirement, would the following work from the "Intellectual and Practical Skills" courses:
BUS-2100: Quantitative Skills for Business
DSI-2000: Visual Storytelling
HPS-2000: Statistics for the Health Professions
MAT-1050: Applied Liberal Arts Mathematics.

When I look at the list of courses under the "Intellectual and Practical Skills" area, I see sub-areas:
- Written Communication
- Oral Communication
- Quantitative Literacy

I wasn't sure if I was only permitted to substitute a course within the same area or if it needs to be within the same sub-area.

For instance, "ENC-1010 Writing for Success" is in "Intellectual and Practical Skills" -> "Written Communication". Could I substitute it with any course in the "Intellectual and Practical Skills" area or must it be satisfied by a course in the "Intellectual and Practical Skills -> Written Communication" sub-area?

Thanks for all of your help, and I apologize once again for all the threads.

@mweichert - your question was regarding a Bachelor of Arts - the link you shared above is for an Associate (ASNSM) in mathematics; which has very different requirements compared to a bachelor.  You can often substitute many suggested courses with TESU degree, but you still need to meet the Gen Ed requirements (although they can be transferred in from sources outside of TESU, such as Sophia). Here are the Gen Ed requirements for TESU - https://www.tesu.edu/academics/courses/g...-education.

What you're calling 'sub areas' are not interchangeable (in most cases). Meaning you cannot replace, or swap out, the Written requirement (Comp I) with an Oral or Quantitative substitute. Now, could you substitute Precalculus for Algerbra within the Quantitative Literacy - maybe (even probably), again it depends on the specific degree and its requirements.
