The Commissioned Corps uses the same military pay tables, housing and food allowance as any other branch of service. You choose the agency you want to work for (providing there is a job opening) and you choose the location. Enlisted and officers can transfer military time over to the Commissioned Corps and still retire in 20.

U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) at www. usphs .gov (remove spaces). There are many professions listed under "Health Services" and you don't have to be clinical. If you are interested and think you qualify for the position, apply! Apply for everything!

How do you know what rank you would be? I was trying to view the wage tab and I didn't have enough knowledge about that kind of thing. One really awesome looking job- that would be EXACTLY the type of job I would love- is for an OB Nurse on an Indian Reservation. It said O4-O5-O6, but again, not really sure what that means. Right now they also have a $25k signing bonus for nurses....drool....
Also, can someone explain about living arrangements? Do you have to be housed, and what if you have a family? I read "housing allowance" but what does that mean?

Where are you seeing the O-4 O-5 O-6 thing? All I saw when I looked was that starting pay depends on experience. O-4 seems like a VERY high rank to start off at, but I don't know much about these guys. Google military pay charts to see what your base pay would be at any of those ranks.
If the housing arrangement is anything like the rest of the services, they give you a housing allowance every month with which you pay for whatever place you can find to rent. You have essentially total control over where you want to live. The housing allowance is on a different, (higher) pay scale if you are married and increases incrementally if you have dependents. The housing allowance, or BAH, scale also increases with your rank. You can find that chart on the internet as well, usually right next to the base pay chart.

I did notice for the nurses, they have to have bachelor degrees as the minimum, and many required master degrees, do you think that might have something to do with the grade?

How sweet would that be if you could sign on as an O-5 or O-6! :eek: Worth looking into if you meet the requirements! I sure don't. :o If one could sign on as an O-6 though, the pay grade couldn't go any higher than that, I think. Above that are the flag officer ranks (generals and admirals) and they don't like giving those to direct commissioned people. Then again, I don't know much about these guys.

Here are the job listings that I got excited about. I was wrong about the grade, in one it says "rank" (same?) but I mixed up the two listings. Here is the copy/paste...I don't qualify anyway, but it was fun to look ahead:
