A lot of travel is basic common sense such as don't go into a narco area.

Have some backups of your personal identification, wallet, cell phone, etc in case you lose these things.

There are some exceptions (example: Mexico). Many foreign tourists travel to Tulum and Playa Del Carmen for vacation, but those are narco territories. Narcos avoid harassing foreigners because their businesses (hotel, restaurants, etc) often serve that demographic. Narcos are bad people, but they know when to avoid crime to attract tourists.
