Transfer 33 Graduate Credits - Excelsior MPA
#1
Has anyone enrolled, transfer credits to, or reviewed this Master of Science in Public Administration program at Excelsior College. It looks like you can transfer in 33 of the 36 Graduate credits needed. This is very unusual for a Masters program, just want to make sure I am reading this right.
Also, I wanted to know if any of the subscription programs Sopia, VESI, ect; offered courses that would meet some of the MPA course requirements. I will be doing more research. Let me know what you think!

Please see the program on the Excelsior site.

Most of the graduate courses like VESi and Sophia are for education degrees. I don't think we know of any non-education degrees where you do a real chunk of the degree in that way.

However, you can do an MPA through a competency program like Hodges. They charge $3500 per term for an unlimited amount. If someone goes fast, they might be able to do it in 1 term.

This is awesome. I will definitely check out Hodges, I love the competency based model. Thanks!

Most schools only allow the transfer of 6 -15 graduate level credits at most. Is this due to accreditation? I have NEVER seen a program that allows you to transfer in all but 3 credits into a Masters degree program. Any additional insight on Excelsior?

Well, Liberty allows 50% of grad credits to be transferred. I believe TESU allows all but 3. And probably COSC?

Excelsior, TESU, and COSC are The Big Three because of allowing so many transfer credits for undergrad.

But, it seems like someone couldn't find that many credits that worked in most cases.

Does TESU allow that much for graduate programs? COSC has one master's program, and it only allows six transfer credits.

Only the MPA program at Excelsior allows for 33 transfer credits. The MBA allows up to 24 transfer credits, but this depends on how many foundational courses you need because the MBA can require up to 51 credits. I believe the other master's programs at Excelsior allow up to 50% transfer credits.

Wow. It would be awesome to find an alternative way to meet these course requirements. I know someone has come up with a clever plan. I will be standing by for updates!  Shy

I noticed you're almost done with your MBA from WGU. Is MPA necessary? It's mainly for individuals wanting to be working in the public sector. What is your final goal? If you are going to get an MPA, both Excelsior and Hodges are IACBE accredited.

Even though you can transfer so many credits into the MPA at Excelsior, I think the Upower program at Hodges might be a better fit for you since you'll be somewhat familiar with the competency-based degree models, probably cheaper/easier/faster.

For more info on Hodges and their program see my posting here about them: http://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/showthre...#pid245832

If a MPA is what you want I would shop around for cheaper tuition unless of course you have excellent tuition assistance. I am doing my MPA at Arkansas State U online with tuition at $294 an hour compared to Excelsior at $645 if my quick glance at their website is accurate.  I can't understand how a situation would occur to where someone would almost complete a full MPA program just to transfer to Excelsior. Also, Excelsior is not NASPAA accredited which could affect your chances at internships or some jobs in governments if that is a concern.  Not to slam Excelsior but there are cheaper perhaps better options out there.
